A Mexican tipping the scales at 560 kilograms (1,234 pounds) will be listed as the world's fattest man by the Guinness Book of Records, while a loss of 200 kilos (440 pounds) may make him the man who lost the most weight.

"I'm glad to be in the Guinness Book as the fattest man. I am also happy to have lost 200 kilos," Manuel Uribe, 41, told AFP.

Uribe was able to leave his home in Monterrey, northern Mexico in March aboard a trailer to celebrate his weight loss.

Guinness has recognized his weighty achievement with a glass plaque.

"They gave it to me, I have it in my hands," said Uribe, who founded an organization to help overweight people.

Uribe's photograph appears in the 2008 Guinness Book of Records alongside a description of the treatment he has had and offers of surgery he has received.

Uribe said the editor of the book had promised to visit him next year, and held out the possibility of appearing in the 2009 edition as the man who had lost the most weight.

Uribe appeared on television in 2006 seeking help for his excess weight, which has plagued him for more than 20 years, most of which he has spent in bed.

Providing his heart doesn't do the rest of his body a favour and fail under the huge load required of it..

Sorry but at what point does someone like that start thinking... hmm feeling a bit chubby today.. Energy cannot be destroyed, just changed from one form to another. If you put 1000 calories in and you only burn 100... then that's 900 calories to be turned into fat. :yuck:

Even if he lost weight and became "normal" again, he'd need to spend quite some time in hospital removing that lil bit of extra skin he have left over.

The saddest thing about these people is that they were unable to leave their bed/ home, so it was family members who kept on feeding them. These family members are just as much to blames as the overweight people themselves as they are in effect feeding the addiction. Why didn't any of these people think "Oh, he's got a bit too big, maybe I should stop feeding him so much?" or go and get professional help???

There was a similar case on TV last year (I think it was called "The Worlds Fattest Man"), and the wife turned round to the TV company and said "I didn't realise he'd got so big". Well hello, your husband got so big he resembled a beached whale, couldn't get out of bed to urinate/ defecate and got so big that his body weight was crushing his internal organs. Stupid woman :nutter: Sometimes it seems that the family of the obese need just as much help and education as the obese themselves...

Yup, that's the one. I think it was part of something called the "Body Shock" series of programmes on Channel 4 or 5. Again, the family of the obese were just as guilty for feeding the addiction and also ignoring the advice of the medical professionals once the obese person was admitted for treatment.

And it IS an addiction. There are strong psychological issues involved, but only recently have the medical industry realised that. Until you treat the mind as well as the body the obese person will continue to want to eat.

They were his thighs. They'd simply got so big that the weight distorted them - what you are seeing is a huge fold of flab.

Though he is mostly to blame I do feel sorry for the guy. He clearly needed help long ago and never got it. His family then continued to make things worse for him by ignoring his very obvious problems until they'd escalated so far out of control that he became a freak - the Worlds Fattest Man.

If that guy was an animal then his family would be had up for cruelty. Personally I don't think there is any difference and they should still be charged with cruelty. What they did was add to and effectively encourage the suffering of a human being. Sad
