Hi all,

Currently at western super mare on the way up the car was randomly at times pull to the left and when I counter steer this the car would make a knocking sound with vibrations whilst it's doing it. It would then let go and drive for a while fine and then do it again, doesn't do it driving around town only on motorways I had the tracking done last weekend so can't see it being this? The car is currently at 111,850 miles. I am needing to drive home to Plymouth shortly any ideas as to what to look for would be brilliant.

Many Thanks

Martyn

Sounds like a fun ride! Firstly, and simply, are your tyres up to pressure? If so, are you able to jack the side up, take the wheel off and have a look at all the bits around there.

If you've just had the tracking done, have they tightened up the track rod ends? What's the car like under braking? Could be something to do with them...

Is your anti roll bar ok? Bushes not excessively worn, or has it snapped?

Keep us updated :)

Check the front strut top mount on the passenger side (ie, the bit under the bonnet at the top of the wheel arch).
Had a near identical issue with my doblo a few weeks back - although mine was drivers side - turned out that the top mount had rusted through and collapsed.

^^^ What Ravenskull said lol.

When you say play, in what direction? Mine has a bit of "linear" play, in and out of the gearbox. But only by a few mm. Rotary play is not good!

If you can, lift the wheel and spin it, right around to both locks....any noise? Grab the wheel and see if there is any movement in any axis?

Possibles to check include:

anything on wheel catching and knocking? I have had wheel balance weights come loose and then knock and catch and also bumped front rim (crappy roads round here eh!)heavily enough to cause them to knock.

put car down and check front damper, by bouncing on wing. I have had one totally collapse internally, loosing oil, so it was just bouncing around.

If you are getting a 'click, click, click' on full lock turning at low speed, this is most probably a CV joint going. Can go on for ages like that.

Incidentally, having the tracking done last w/end wouldn't discount it, but in my books would make it the first thing to check out...

Good luck

Passenger side drive shaft has the play in and out as mentioned but also has up and down play ( oops! ) when wheel is lifted it will rotate and then go tight and when this happens the drive shaft rises.

I've been looking into this it could be either the bearings are shot or the drive shaft has somehow bent?

I'm in the process of sourcing a replacement driveshaft to fit and try.
