Windows 7 Firewall Problems

Bought a new laptop a couple of months ago, trial version of McAfee has expired so have uninstalled it.
Have now tried a few free firewalls and all have the same problem, install OK but when I restart the computer I get the dreaded blue screen of death.
Only solution is to start in safe mode and uninstall the new firewall.

Any suggestions? Anyone had the same problem?

Very odd. Windows 7 has a built in firewall so I'd just stick with that - especially if you are behind a router (NAT). If your really into locking things down then you could enable the outgoing firewall as well, just to prevent any nasties on your machine being about to send messages out.
