I have recently been running my original pc parts in a new case, having swapped them over, the old case was binned.

I have just had a load of problems with the memory, and a bad virus, and I used my Windows XP Disk to attempt reformat and reinstallation, its a proper hologrammed disk

All was going wll until I was asked for my product id/cd key [whatever its called] and I was stuck - I have the packaging for it, the sticker will have been on my old case [I assume?] - which I no longer have, I have found a file on the cd in the i386 folder called 'unattend.txt' and this appears to have a key, but when I put it in when asked I get pop up box with 'this product key not valid'

I am now stuck with a pc I cant get back running, a genuine xp disk, and no working key.

I have tried googling my problem, and have tried a few things to no avail spending hours and hours trying to reformat, reinstall, repartition etc etc. What can I do??


I am so annoyed with the whole thing, yesterday I almost considered taking a sledgehammer to it!!!

btw, I am presently using a works laptop that I borrowed!!

Here is my 100% working method for activating and making Windows XP Professional a genuine copy. This method does not require you to install a crack. I know there are some WGA cracks that are floating around but they do not fully make Windows a genuine copy. This will even work with IE7 and Windows Media Player 11!

IMPORTANT NOTE: this method works with Windows XP Professional (OEM, Retail, Corporate) ONLY and not XP Home, Media Center or any other version.

1. If you haven't installed Windows XP Professional yet, install it first.

2. Download and run Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder 1.41 (Google it)

3. Once you have run Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder 1.41, it will display your current CD key. Click on Options, then Change Windows Key.

4. Enter in the following key and click change:

DX6BH-BXFQK-VVGP6-9J2G4-4WJTQ

OR

JG28K-H9Q7X-BH6W4-3PDCQ-6XBFJ


(NOTE: This key does not work if you use it to install Windows)

5. Close Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder and run it again to verify you have entered in the correct key.

6. Thats it! You're finished. You now have a fully activated and genuine copy of Windows XP Professional. You can even test it with Windows Genuine Validation Tool and it will say it is genuine. Now you can download and install Internet Explorer 7, Windows Media Player 11, and receive Windows Updates.

mon to fri, typical!!! first two calls dont get charged? am I reading that right? £40 thereafter..

best thing to do is install using any key (there's millions online) and then when it wont activate call them (number shown when you choose to activate over the phone) and explain the problem.

you should then get an activation code. if they refuse to give you an activation code, explain that:
-you can prove you have a genuaine copy
-it is running on only 1 machine
-you havent changed the hardware spec at all ever
-the ONLY problem is your case sticker has been removed and lost (say you removed it to prevent others from using the key and now its got lost)

then you're guaranteed to get an activation code. i know this because i've had many wonderful times with xp activation in the past, and all i can say is thank god the phone number is free.

I have tried the activation line, the free one, and its automated, I managed to install my windows xp, and put in an above key to get to this stage, I can then get to the stage where I can activate, I get the series of 6 digits, and enter them into the phone on the automated line, it then tells me there is a problem, and to enter my product key - THE ONE I DONT HAVE!!!! before the process loops round again.

I have never had this trouble before when installing XP, why now?

now you dont have your product key


it sounds like the problem you had is because the product key you used had been marked as fraudulent, this happens when they get posted online and suddenly hundreds of people try using the same one.

you can get through to a person using the automated phone service. the automated options are there to catch you out so be careful what option you choose. if the person you get through to tells you you have to buy another license then there's nothing else you can do.
