Hi All,

Can someone tell me via the vin or another way, which 2.8 engine I have in a 1999 Hymer ducato? Says 'engine not known ' on V5.

Check the VIN plate for engine type (Motore) 8140,63 signifies basic diesel 2.8D, 8140.43 represents the 2,8idTD (injection direct Turbo Diesel), while the very unlikely, for 1999, 8140.43s is the code for the 2.8jtd. unijet common rail turbo diesel.

The most probable 2.8idTD can be recognised by having a mechanical injection pump, at the RHS front of the engine, with four injection pipes rising from it to the injectors on the cylinder head.

Edit to add: An intercooled turboo diesel, of the Sofim 8140 series of engines, will have two large rubber air hoses running across the front of the engine to the intercooler which sits to the RHS of the radiator.

any idea where the vin plate would be on a Hymer (ducato) motorhome?

The normal position for the VIN plate on a Ducato is approximately central above the radiator. However if the vehicle is an "A" class MH, then you would have to consult a Hymer expert. If not over radiator, then try on face of step inside doors, or on cill.
