Technical water pump replacement

Hi,

I'm going to be replacing the timing belt on 2007 X250 2.3 Multijet ducato and want to replace the water pump at the same time. There are a lot of different brands of aftermarket pumps available - are there any I should avoid?

Also it's unclear if I need to buy a gasket or seal for the water pump - I spoke to a dealer and they said a gasket comes with their (overpriced) water pump. But the aftermarket pumps don't include one. Does anyone know for certain?

Whenever I fit non oem parts, I always for for parts made in Germany. German engineering is probably the best in the world, and this seems to extend to everything they make. A quick look on ebay should find you a complete belt/tensioner/water pump kit. The german ones are fairly obvious. If by some chance there is no water pump gasket (very unusual), you've got plenty of time to get one from a Fiat/Citroen/Peugeot dealer.

Thanks for the advice on German parts. I had a look at ebay and i found a lot of kits for older models but none for the 2.3JTD or multijet. None that include a water pump anyway.

Im not sure if the supplier actually knows whats in the box and im not sure the dealer knows this model very well, so I don't trust either! I am in Australia so I want to make sure I get the right part the first time so I was hoping someone had first hand experience in replacing it themselves.

Being german doesn't mean much anymore, even the biggest names like lemforder are outsourcing to far east. If you don't want a no brand pump then an skf pump is your best bet for the 2.3 expect to pay 50-100% more for an skf pump.

and is a gasket required? Does it have a part number? I think i saw an o-ring in 1 picture but never a gasket.

As far as the pump gasket goes, they have normally been included with the pump with quality aftermarket pumps on all the ones I have installed.
If you are looking for a Timing Belt kit try - Item number:140461670683 on fleabay a Dayco kit #KTB339E . There are also the timing tools as well but are in the UK Item number:160675445526. These tools of course can be improvised. Would recommend checking the eLearn manual for the procedure to do the Belt Timing on the 2.3 engine.

I found a google image that clearly shows 2 O-rings rather than gaskets. I would post the link but I can't. I found an F1A iveco manual that specifically says "Fit two new seals on the water pump and fit it back on the crankcase". Of course the suppliers can't confirm anything so I purchased a mid-price model and will hope for the best. Here in Oz they are $400-500 while they are 100 pounds in the UK.

Here is an exploded picture of the pump from the ePer Parts Catalogue for the 2.3 JTD engine which is accessible from the link at the top of the Fiat Forum page.
Numbers 3,4,9 & 11 are listed as "gasket seal".
There does not appear to be a paper gasket listed as you have said, do the rubber seals come with the pump.
