Technical Tyres & white wall trims

Hi all, question for you.
What size tyres fit on a standard 500 set up with standard wheels?
135 or only 125?
what have you found to be good tyres and what should I avoid?


Has anyone fitted the white wall trims?
I would have liked white wall tyres but at about 185 Euros a piece I don't think I will bother!

I would go for Pirelli Cinquantiro's. I have fitted the white trims. Dead easy to do. Basically deflate your tyre half way and push them in behind the wheel edge. The only thing I will say though is that they don't stay bright white for long. You'll be constantly cleaning them and applying whitener but like you say rather that than fork out for white wall tyres

When I needed a tyre for my spare last August I searched Google and found a site called tyreleader.co.uk which I bought through. Most suppliers were quoting around £60-£65 for a 125R12 Cinturato but through tyreleader I paid £44.64 including postage. On their website it showed that you needed to order more than 2 tyres to qualify for post free but I wasn't charged for my tyre.

A fantastic price but the thing that shocked me was the tyre was sent from Saarbruken and was with me within 36 hours of ordering.

From that experience I would suggest you try them for anything you need. Hope this info is helpful.

I just checked the website again and the current price for 125R12 Cinturato is £41.69 each!!

Now that's what I call inflation! Bl**dy marvellous, I NEVER recommend and then this happens. Keep an eye on them, probably back down again soon.

There seems to be a bit of an oddity with these Cinturatos. You get them called Pirelli but the ones I ordered, although Cinturato, aren't labelled "Pirelli" but are made in Turkey and called "Formula". Mind you, they are perfectly good and seem to be wearing well.( ie. not wearing at all!).
Possibly there are at least two types and this partly explains the big price differences, eg. tonight varying from around £50 to £100 each. But it doesn't explain the the price hikes. I find that the same thing happens to any holiday or flight that I keep looking at online.

I suspect that Pirelli sold the rights many years ago and they've since moved on to many producers, in various countries. Without going out to check I'm not sure where my tyre was produced but, as shown on the pic of my invoice, mine is labelled as a Ceat Cinturato. I think unless buying a full set most of us look for matching tread patterns. As you say, Peter, wear is unlikely to amount to much.

I fitted the white wall trims and they have started slightly wearing the sidewall of the tyre removing some of the writing

I don't use the car every day so wear is slow but would be concerned if I was using the car more often.

Problem is that the whitewalls look a bit floppy after a while and they do indeed not stay looking clean for long. I tried using some contact adhesive to keep them stuck on the tire which makes them look a bit nicer but now that caused a bit more discolouration... Paolo66 what kind of whitener to you use??

There is an interesting product and a company called mrwhitewalls who will paint your tires for £125 or you can buy their paint for £25. I am quite tempted...

Havent actually used any yet George but you could try the stuff for whitening trainers

I've just bought 5× 125/80/12 for 200€ from fischer500.de in germany and i'd bought the white rims from Axel gerstl.

I've seen various comments on sites about the white trims wearing the tyre away.i may try to keep them in place with a good double sided tape or something

The hunt for tyres is on again for me.
Ideally I want white wall tyres.


Choice
Brockley with 20mm band £92 each
Pirelli Cinturato 40mm band approx. £200 each
Radar Dimax Classic - they do 2 types 20mm & 30mm band - about £55 - 60 each


Has anybody tried the Radar Dimax yet?
I like the Pirelli tyres but cant justify the price.
The Brockleys apparently have a good reputation but it would prefer the wider 30mm band.


I have heard too many bad rumours about the trims. Damage the walls of the tyres and go a funny colour.


Any thoughts?

Hi Sean,

I would personally avoid the “atlas” type of white wall trim- they are well known for causing wear to the tyre side wall and also yellow/go floppy fairly quickly. With my classic Karmann Ghia and now my Fiat 500, I’ve had a lot of success with these German trims- they include a chrome beauty ring, cause no wear at all to the tyre and stay looking good for years;

They’re not cheap, once P&P has been paid for, but can be re-used each time you change tyres.
As it happens, I have a set of 4 brand new steel wheels, part worn Continental tyres, new inner tubes and these Ravus trims fitted for sale, due to a change in plan for my ongoing build. Available for £475 the lot, if required.
