Okay i am going to get my windows tinted in my stilo tomorrow just made my mind up, does anybody know how dark can i get the back ones? I am leaving the front 3 as standard i have a 3dr btw and im getting the back 3 done? So does this mean i can get them really blacked out r is there some sort of limit?

I am going to get these done tomorrow so some advice, and how much is a good price to pay? Just so i know what i am talking about and i know that i am not getting ripped off thanks.

Rear ones can be covered in vinal if you want, no law regarding visability through them, only front (y)

You can go as dark as you like on the rears. You can go up to 30% block (that lets 70% light through) on the 2 front doors.
I had a 70% dark ting on the rear and 30% on the front. This makes the front illegal because glass as standard has a light tint impregnated, but the police dont care as im not blatantly taking the pee.
Oh and i had a dark tint strip done on the front.
Same on both my stilos and havnt been pulled anywhere in the country in over 3 years.
So old car pics first.

I get it done professionally with lifetime warranty not from one of these mobile cowboys and i pay £160 but i believe the going rate for all windows and tint strip is £220.

The tint lawes are a farce. The standard tints on the Police Volvo T5s are heavier than 30% up front as proven in an episode of I think it was road wars or summat similar a couple of years back!

However, the tints are classed as a modification and should be declared to insurance people. I called Direct Line yesterday to enquire about what it'd cost me if I had the rear half of my car tinted, result, £103 a year extra on my premium.

If you have a prang with tinted windows which aren't declared, no payout for you!

There are legal limits specifying how dark tinted windows can be on a vehicle:
  • behind the B Post (ie rear passenger windows and rear screen) there are no limits
  • side windows in front of the B Post (ie front passenger windows) must allow 70% of light through
  • front windscreens must allow 75% of light through
Be careful whether the tint you are considering blocks 70% of light or allows through 70% of light. For front windows the regulations are about the amount of light that is allowed through. Also be aware that if you have a factory tint that blocks 10%, you will only be able to block an additional 20%.

Window tints are not checked on the annual MoT test - the cost of the equipment required at every MoT centre would be excessive. Window and windscreen tints are the responsibility of VOSA. If you are stopped by the police and found to have excessively tinted windows, you will be required to remove the tint. Driving with illegally tinted windows may invalidate your insurance. Limo style all round tints are illegal in the UK.

The window tinting limits required are primarily for safety reasons. In dull conditions and at night, the driver's ability to see is severely hampered by excessive tints. Not all countries have regulations as strict as the UK. In these countries a number of road deaths have been directly attributed to the driver being unable to see properly through a heavily tinted front windscreen. In addition it is helpful for other road users to be able to see the driver of the vehicle, particularly at junctions.

Motorcyclists are also subject to laws restricting tinted helmet visors.
None of the four cars on the left would be street legal for driving on UK roads. Professional car window tinting companies will be able to advise you on legal tints

I know people who have been made to remove their dark tints that are more than 30% up front. As i said they dont actually seem to care if you do as i have done.
Shadeyman you must be with the wrong insurer. My quote went up about £70 for tints, sports exhaust, bucket seats and sports wheel declared. :slayer:

My cars are now completely standard apart from a tuning box I have fitted to our multiwagon. Swinton charged me £15 a month for an extra 30Bhp. (y)
