Just returned from running a friend to Cardiff. Noticed the following:
Temperature only got as high as 70 at lights, ussually nearer 60. Heater blowing barely luke warm. Car takes ages to warm up. Stalls at lights, even after 25 miles, if no choke. I'm pretty sure this is a defective thermostat, correct? Just read in the Haynes that the housing is intergral and gets replaced as a lump. Any idea how much? Any experience you wish to share (cheese head bolts, reverse threads, hidden bolts?

cost is about £10-£12 from motor factors, just 2 normal bolts 10mm i think. check your hose clip first you may have the sort you have to replace, if so you will need to get a screw type clip aswell about 50p.

Easier with the distributor out of the way.

Scribe a line across the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and the distributor so you can but it back without loosing the timing.

Thanks folks! Went a treat. See what you mean about removing the dist., but you can also use a 10" extension on your ratchet, and then turn the front bolt out in the open, with the fingers of your left hand just keeping the extension square to the work.

It's one helluva journey from Afghanistan to Cardiff :p

Quite a few gone Plymouth to Dakar - 3699 miles - ISTR 3 went earlier this year.

Doubt if there will be many more though:
rules changing - LHD only - to suit Dakar...
