Continuing my journey of fixing faults with my 1992 Ducato Hymer motorhome.

The speedo is registering nothing so I relied on my satnav for speed on my 230 mile trip home after purchasing.
Should be a simple fix, the cable is simply not attached at the back of the instrument cluster.

Is it just a case of squeezing the two ends together as hard as possible until it clicks into place? Or is there more to it
As I've tried doing that, but maybe I just need to try a bit harder...

Or is it easier to remove the part off the instrument cluster, attach the speedo cable with better leverage, then reattach the part to the instrument cluster.

The connection was similar on my 1990 Talbot Express, but I sold that in 2006. If you look closely at you photo, you will see that the part on the instrument panel has an inclined ridge and trough for two? of the fingers at the end of the ridged cylinder to latch into.

However in your situation, I would be investigating as to why the cable is not connected, Is the cable complete, and free to rotate, or possibly broken?

It turns out I was just being an idiot. You can pull back the end of the speedo cable revealing all of the latches and enabling them to expand a bit 🤦‍♂️

As for why it wasn't connected - I only did a small test drive when I purchased it. The seller lived in a very rural with rough roads so not really fast enough to get up to any speed. After buying and getting on to a main road and noticing I contacted the seller and the usual type of talk - "It was fine last week when I drove it" but also he did do a clear out and tidied up a mess of wires.

Seems to be the case as even when pulling the white bit back up to the end of the cable it doesn't seem to take much effort to pull it back off! So I've put some tape on it to hold it in place for when I get around to testing it.

I mentioned it to a garage while the clutch was being replaced (I've had bad luck with this vehicle so far) who pointed out it wasn't connected, said the speedo worked after putting it back in but was quite erratic. My guess is that it was simply getting looser and looser when they did it as it was doing nothing again when I got it back.

Tl;dr the end of the cable seems a bit dodgy
