Technical Someone help!

I have a stilo 1.8 3 doors. Driving around recently iv noticed a strong fuel smell. Consumption seems okay though, but it smells rather strong from exhaust as well as from the engine area! Also, if i rev it a few thousand revs and release quickly the car revs drop all the way and cuts out. It also cuts out when stopping at traffic lights (which is extremely embarassing ha). All this cutting out shizz only happens at certain times, regardless of engine temperature. Any ideas someone?
