I stopped for a minute because I had forgotten something. Went back to car and pressed "go" and instead of the usual screen it said software update needed and started doing it. Didnt seem to give me a "later" option and I had to sit there for 10 minutes. Is this a one off for my new car or does it happen often? It said dont drive while its doing it, I wasnt in a rush but could have been wanting to drive to hospital or whatever.

Hi, in nearly three years of ownership mine has never done a similar update but mine isn't a LaPrima so doesn't have sat nav and other connectivity features. I'm a member of another group and, to be honest, there isn't a lot of posting about over the air updates.
My new Scala does this but it seems to give me the option by inviting me to touch "download now" or just leave it. Having downloaded, which it's happy to do while you're driving, it then starts the actual update when you switch the engine off. Warns you not to drive whilst it's loading the update and the garage tells me that if I do it stops the update which is not advisable. How have we ever existed without this? What a load of absolute B/S!

The garage tells me it's permanently connected on line and I can even book services and talk to their help centre and other "stuff" from the driver's seat. No doubt because it's permanently connected some clever Hacker will probably be able to take over and command the electric steering to put me in the ditch for his amusement! This has all gone too far, we don't need it!

A friend's son rolled his car in a ditch on a country road and the car activated its emergency call system, directing emergency services to his location as, being unconscious, he didn't respond to a 999 operator who "called" the car. I think this is a decent implementation of technology that, in this case, was absolutely needed.

Good point. I think mine is supposed to do that. It also has a red button in the roof mounted console which you can press.
