As above brought a van months ago, ever since had it its had slow start (does start fine if leave it for 30secs to a minute to warm up plugs) but the coil light flashes once started goes off after a bit but engine hunts / idle fluctuates up and down slightly not much, and occasionally have smoke that smells like oil or diesel, fluids are fine hasn't touched a drop of oil since had it. My first thought was glow plugs as mines hit 100k or possibly sticking / clogged injector but wanted a second opinion. Once moving drives 100% fine and idles fine now smoke etc just on initial start up for first min or so.
To add its the 1.3 90 multijet 2015

Does point to heater plugs, especially if runs fine once warmed up.
There are several guides on Forum re testing heater plugs and relay, so I would look in that direction.:)

To add last night I drove home other half's house (3 mile ish) smoked on start up and was fine then when parked up at home was smoking badly on idle (idle was fine) was more od a grayish tinge smoke still no oil or coolant loss thinking possibly an injector issue perhaps

What you have just added to the original post can point to the need for a proper DPF Regen, but is a separate issue to cold starting generally.

Sorry that should read DPF Regen, old age is getting to me.:)
The Egr valve replacement could be a sign he was aware of an issue.
May need more details, error codes, age of vehicle, engine type, size etc.
Generally DPF Regen is indicated by pungent white smoke when engine warmed up, sometimes with different engine characteristics/uneven running and warning on dashboard etc.

Coil light flashing after start often indicates one or more glow plugs open circuit.

How many miles has it covered ?

Covered 101k it's 2015 1.3 multijet 90 bhp had laptop on it no error codes etc only thing ever comes up is plug light flashes for about 10 secs on start up did smoke once few weeks ago whoch was dpf doing a regen and cut out in traffic before finished so blew alot of smoke but took it for a good run and has since been fine just been out in it no smoke at all but got some dpf additive so going fill up and go for a good run
