Technical Selenia oil

Technical Selenia oil

Fully sunth is a bit OTT for that era car / engine, but the 10W/40 is probably the right equivalent these days now that basic specs are improving and traditional grades are becoming harder to find as manufacturers try to offer 15 different variants of 5W/30 and 0W/30 etc, depending on whether you've got a Ford, Vauxhall, VW, Renault, etc etc....

When the car was new the Selenia oil recommended was probably Olio Fiat 15W/40 semi synth...

hi Simon , would think any decent quality oil of that grade would be ok as your not doing 12 thou every year and racing on the track , I change mine every year with owt that's a good price [emoji106]?

I'm smiling again :) Over priced oil. Don't waste your money, especially so for a wee old Punto. I had a 75sx for over eight years & used 10/40 semi from Halfords or supermarkets when oil deals were on. Never missed a beat.

Bottom line here is you are paying way over the odds for identical spec oil that can be bought elsewhere for far less. Aye the power of advertising is alive & well....:)

you say that but when have you ever seen selenia advertised anywhere...? I certainly haven't ever and it has the least flashy packaging of any oil in the world pretty much, asda branded oil makes more wild claims on it :ROFLMAO:
And its not even that expensive - granted not the cheapest available out there but when i have bought it i have generally been buying loads of other stuff from S4P and it all arriving in one parcel from a company i know and trust is convenient for than anything else, i'm not really ever buying it cause it says in the owners manual to use it, i know its just 10w40 semi synth - if i happen to be buying stuff from eurocarparts using a deal i will buy some oil there instead..

For a small saloon car in average urban use the type and grade of engine oil is not so very important as the climate and frequency of oil changes. In UK short runs promote sludging and acid buildup, no synthetic or any other oil is proof against this problem. An oil needs to get around quickly in cold weather so should never exceed 15W40 and 5W30 would do no harm unless the engine is worn. In Almeria where I live I use Ertoil SPHD15W40 specified for heavy hardworking trucks and never have any lubrication troubles at all although with long runs and a warm climate sludging and acid buildup is not a problem.

But why pay the earth for synthetic oils when they are often mainly mineral in content the synthetic part being more an additive than base content? It you are going to do what you should, change every 5000 miles or every year with a middle-priced oil such as Millers 15W40 and forget the bull**** of synthetic overpriced chemical factory products.

you use truck oil in a 1.6 Punto..
is it "free from work"..??:)

No it isn't knocked off from work, it is bought by myself in 50 litre barrels for around 124 euros collected, and I put this in all our vehicles petrol or diesel, Punto mk1, Dodge Caliber diesel, Jeep Limited diesel, Fiat Ducato motor-caravan, Ford Escort diesel.

I do this because the hot summer and warm winter climate in Almeria requires a grade around 15W40 or even 20W50 and this commercial Cepsa or Ertoil lubricant is good for high temperatures whether caused by hot weather or hard work. I could change at longer intervals, 12000km for example rather than 5000km, but at the low price of this oil there's no reason to economise unduly.

The Ford Escort is a 1997 1753cc TD 90hp and showing 60,000kms on it's 4th time round the clock making 360,000kms, never had the head off nor a clutch nor any work done that wasn't replacement of consumables, so my policy is borne out by results.

People who pay 50 or 60 euros for synthetic rubbish need their heads looking at, and they then have to make it run for 30,000kms to eke out a bit of economy, while the sludge and acid and water build up in the oil. Not a sensible policy.

no-one here has suggested anyone does use fully synth in a mk1 punto, besides if they do let them, its there money at end of the day. Simon asked if the stuff he linked was the right stuff as per suggested by fiat, he was told that no, its the semi-synth fiat recommends. You have to realise Simon is a bit mad, he even has a genuine fiat battery in his punto but then his punto does look like its brand new off the production line and so i get that. let him put what he wants in it without branding him a stupid and that he needs his head looking at. And like i said before Selenia is not a super duper expensive oil anyway.
