Hello for my first car I choose a fiat stilo 1.6 petrol 3 door Iv had no problems up to a few days ago when I got the car home parked it on my drive then it was left for a few hours. When I went back the car had a light on the dash with a car with a padlock in it and showing a messege saying security fault loose conection. Had the car checked over no loose wires but then had the ecu checked the computer could not access it so did some research and people had the same problem they had replaced their ecu due to it was damaged so im going to do the same and see if this makes a difference. Has anyone got any thoughts or am I doing the right thing :) brilliant car just want it to work
 
My father's car had this problem. It's a 1.8 petrol. He had a weak battery (even lower amps than what is recommended), and one day he simply had this error on the dash.

It turned out, in his case, it was a loose connection inside the ECU so they've managed to reflow it and it got fixed. Hasn't had any problems since, it's been over 2 years since the fault.

It could also be one of the plugs under the fuse box, in case you haven't checked those, it's worth a shot. If the problem is there you would get the same error.

The 1.6 is prone to ECU related issues because of where fiat located them in the engine bay. They're essentially sat on top of the engine, pretty much one of the hottest places in the engine bay, which seems to overheat the ECU and even melt some of the connections on the board, causing various problems.


Check out this video here which gives you a bit of an explanation what is going on. All I will say is exercise caution if you're ever going to fiddle with the ECU or go to extreme lengths like taking it apart and prodding with soldering iron like this fella does. Obviously its the brain that runs your engine and you don't want to trash it.





If you're replacing your ECU that should solve it right enough but consider relocating it to a cooler location - there is plenty of info around here on it as it's a fairly common 'fix' that people undertake.

just updating you all i changed my ecu had it decoded i fitted the new ecu but the security fault loose fault has dissapered but there is still one light still on the dash a car with a padlock the car will still not start.
 
Hello this is my final update as the issue has been solved all fault codes and errors have gone the car was mechanically fine the ecu was sending faults saying that the car was faulty eventually it locked itself. I then sent ecu off for repair to a company called ecu testing they tested my ecu and due to the ecu sitting on top of the engine it had made the soldier melt what was causing all the problems and the fiat stilo 1.6 has a coman fault with the ecu some of these ecus were recalled due to the solder on the chips inside. It had a rebuild and it's working fault free for now thank you for all your advice hopefully this information will help someone who has had the same experience. To have the ecu rebuilt only costs £195 plus vat with a lifetime warranty
