General Rust on tops of suspension dampers..

Was slightly surprised when having a poke around under the bonnet of my 8 month old Pop to see that the tops of the suspension struts which come through into the engine bay are extremely rusty.

Has anyone else experienced this on their cars?

every single 500 i have worked on has this happening, even from PDI. There is no fix for it, unless you count a bit of grease. I have never seen one snap even when i have replaced strut tops on them!

Can't see you snapping an m12 ish threaded rod... big problem for the home mechanic trying to remove using an Alan key to hold the strut shaft without it rounding out

i have seen a allan key snapped in one but that wasnt by us, they come off fairly easily, if someone has a problem removing it they seriously need to build up some strength

Good workshop practice would see the rusty thread at least cleaned up fleetingly with a wire brush and some anti seize compound being brushed on it as the nut is removed..

sod that, portable electric gun, 18mm socket and a pair of grips on the shocker shaft off in 10 seconds

Umm....... any damage to the shock shaft will tear the seals on the damper to shreds in no time. THere's a reason why using apair of grips on a shock shaft isn't the standard way of removing dampers.

These are "Doglips" - no, really, they are.

And there is the reason why I do any maintenance/service/overhaul work on my own car. I wonder if you tell your customers that their leaking dampers is 'wear and tear' shortly after changing their strut top bearings for them.

no need for grips, use impact gun and they come off easily.
