Why do signs never ever illustrate which side the middle lane splits from...

As you can see on the image the lane splits from the right but there is no indication of this. It could have been from the left, who knows.

This isnt really an issue but in busy times, it really can be a mess.

There are signs which show : < ^ : ^> : >

But with no indication which lane it splits from.

Does this every annoy anybody..or just me?

I get what you mean and yes it does get on my wick.

In M.K.on the A509 near the M1 the signage and road marking are not very clear. I don't go there very often now and always forget which lane I need to use.

General rule of thumb, 2 lanes then left for anything up to and including the 12 o'clock position, right lane, 12 o'clock position and after unless marked otherwise.

3 lanes then similar applies except middle is normally as marked from experience.

not so

2 roundabouts near me
ALL are Left hand Lane only for Going Left
Right is for Straight on and Right

I regulary get cut up as people go in the left hand land (so there going left right? Nope they fly straight infront of you cutting you up and dont have a ****ING CLUE why i'm blowing my horn and flashing my lights)

Its a poor rule of thumb that people stick too, really if you take the wrong exit - tuff, find a safe place to turn around and rejoin the roundabout

i don't think the op was asking what lane he needs to use when at roundabout, but what queue to be in out of the 2 if he wants to use the middle when there, as some times right lane splits in to 2 and some times left lane splits to 2, ok if there not a lot of traffic and/or you are local to the roundabout you are using, but if not and you are in the wrong one ready for the split no bugger is going to let you in

I did say unless marked otherwise ;)

Like you say though if people know they're in the wrong lane tough, exit roundabout and then turn around. I've done it several times where I've been in the wrong lane in places I don't know, just exit where that lane is suppose to do and then turn around. Far safer.

Ah right I see what you mean.

It's like a roundabout on A12 in Yarmouth. They've just redone it and changed layout. 2 lanes to get on, left is ahead only, and right is right only.

Then you get onto roundabout and it's 3 lanes on there, of which the middle has arrows saying straight on or right. So sort of mucks up the two joining lanes.

yah that :)

But ill explain.

You are driving down a dual carriage way and there is a sign showing which lane to be in for the roundabout.

The sign has 3 lanes and you are driving down a 2 lane dual carriageway.

Now, it is clear that the lanes will soon split into three for the roundabout but there is no indication if it will split from the left lane or the right lane.

Anyone know what I mean :D

EDIT: i completely understand lanes its just the bloody split :( gets on my t**s

well it splits from the outside lane, as splitting a lane to turn right from the inside lane may prove difficult to work.

here its the left lane splits into 2

there is no national standard, we all know we want the middle one to go straight across, but what lane you queue in to get into the middle lane isn't standard so unless you have been there before you have no idea until you are near the end and can see road markings

Easy fix, just Paint direction's/pace notes on the road like they do at the Nürburgring :D

hit the nail on the head!

Its not usually a problem just when its busy.

A simple sign stating "lane splits from right" and vice versa would be great!
