Hi all, I am considering what to do with my 500L, and have been looking into tuning it, with the difficulty in obtaining carbs I've wondered about injection, D'Angelo Motori have used Jenvey throttle bodies, I have asked Jenvey if they could supply a system similar to the DellOrto 32/28, and will report back as and when. With a standard 499cc engine is it possible to open up the inlet and use larger valves, or just use a 126 head.

There’s a lot of tuning you can do with the 500 engine before you need think about something like injection, presuming you don’t just want the challenge / hobby of making injection work 🙂

Have a search on here and you’ll find a similar recipe repeated several times. A head skim, to bring compression up, some basic porting of the head, a mild cam, a freer flowing exhaust and the IMB28 carb from a 126 (you’ll notice D’Angelo run this carb on a tuned 650cc engine claiming 40hp on their website) will make quite a difference.

Larger intake valves are available and some say will help with tuning, obviously the head needs work to fit the large valves.

The easiest route to more power for most people is to drop in a 650cc engine as a starting point.

You can fit bigger bore barrels and pistons to a stock 500 engine, but 540cc is the limit without machining to the crank case.

So the question is really; what is your end goal? Do you want some ‘simple’ bolt on power mods or do you want to push boundaries a bit further and maybe walk a less trodden path?

If you do go for injection, please write about it for us on here. I am heading in this direction myself and would be keen to see how someone else approaches it 🙂

There is so much that can be done with these cars. I may keep the original engine, perhaps a 126 head, flowed big valves, cam, distributor less ignition. Watch this space!

So many people have asked me about tuning the 500/126 engine that I have put my thoughts down on paper---if you would like a copy of "my thoughts", drop me a line and I will forward them onto you. [email protected] The main thing to think about is that in this country there is dearth of people expert in tuning these engine AND the immediate availability of tuning parts---they nearly all have to be brought in from Europe which from personal (and, pocket-wise, painful) experience is not a cheap excercise. One does not buy a 500 to go really quick, so it is better to have a car that is 'sensibly-quicker' than standard BUT RELIABLE

I really like the D'Angelo kit, but the injection kit is silly money. I think more can be done prior to.
