Just noticed something completely random, cars only been with us 14 years and only noticed today :roll eyes:

The engine warning light on my car is red, never seen a red EML before. In other cars (including other punto's I've seen) the light is amber and is lit from ignition until the engine is started, then goes out.

Mine is red and is lit for a few seconds after the ignition is switched on then goes out (with engine off, and stays off when engine is started)

Nothing wrong with the car, just wondering if anyone knows why?

Hi mate,

Its to do with EOBD compatability. Most early petrol Punto's (99/00) will have a RED eml, along with JTDs and 1.9D.

The majority from 2001 on (excluding the 1.9 JTD and 1.9D) became fully OBDII compliant and thus had a Yellow eml light. The multijet diesels changed to yellow.

The majority of the early petrol's with RED eml, can still be read using OBDII software/devices, they just use slightly different protocols.

I could bore you with the changes in Protocol etc but to be honest id probably send myself to sleep!

Ahh, mine must of just missed out on that then! ( its a 2001 'x' reg)

My brother read the codes on my car with a VAG code reader, seemed to work ok, although nothing came up (nothing wrong it, just plugged it in to test it as he had just got it)

Hi,

It may well be that your car was manufactured in 2000 and not registered until 2001. As a result it would be a KWP2000 variation iirc as opposed to ISO 9141-2. (Thus having the RED eml)

Most obd2 readers should still be able to read most parameters (VAG Com and similar support KWP200 I believe anyway) its just with some kit you may get erroneous readings. For example certain OBD2 kit may give a CTS reading of 999oC on a pre 2001 car when in fact theres nothing wrong with the CTS etc.

i know it was early version had the red light :)
I cant remember if my basic dash had a red EML or yellow....

it was a 2000 X 1.2 8v

I changed the dash for an Active one - so i got the rev counter etc :)

that most certainly was yellow

Ziggy

Ah right, mines has its original dash as its an ELX so came with the rev counter anyway.
