RCL Chip in key dead

Hi guys, long time no speak.
The old girl is very well albeit with a flat battery having not been run fo a while due to a little problem I hope someone can help with.
Couple of months back, put her in the garage and the RCL wouldn't work so I couldn't lock her. Having sent off the key to one of these key repair companies they report that the RCL chip in the key is dead and they can't fix it.
So, any options other than off to FIAT with a lubricated ringpiece for a new key is the question?
