I'm guessing you put something you shouldn't have in the plastic bottle (toxic waste, acid, some kind of corrosive liquid etc) and it ate it's way through or reacted and exploded, burned your camper van to the ground and all you have left of it is the key, which you had in your pocket and thankfully were nowhere near the pyrotechnics when it happened.

your filler neck split, so you emptied the contents of the bottle, butchered it with the key, and fitted it as a temporary measure?

They do appear in the same photo... but this is rigged - def. not together at the time, and no **** involved but original contents were emptied out and scissors were used to shape bottle, not key, but you're in the right area...
the narrow end of the bottle is the crucial bit...

im lost with the key though

aha, you wedged the key in the end of the bottle to open the syphon blocker flap bit inside the filler neck!
