Hello all. 2018 fiat 500x with blanks under the door panel where puddle lamps would go, there is wiring there but they do not seem to have power. Ordered some online and was hoping for plug and play. Anyone know where the wires should get power?

Background information:

Do you know if there are varying BCM options,

(Like my frustrating attempts to upgrade my Cruise Contol.. " wrong option of kit" 😣)
The BCM is in many respects a mystery. Being essentially a computer controlled unit then different firmware can be installed. Whilst if you like it has say x I/O lines plus the various CAN and serial interfaces what they can all do it determined by a) the version of the BMC and b) the installed firmware. On top of this you have the infamous PROXY confirguration when bytes within a control block determine what is supported and specific functions.

I'm not an expert on changing vehicle configurations and functions however there appear to be people who do this with varying degrees of success.

My thoughts are that if your model and year of car supported say cruise control from the factory for some and not others then if one gets the steering wheel/controls for the same model and year then the BCM should support the function. Doing a PROXY alignment may just automatically enable that cruise control function OR it may require a CUSTOM configuration by changing certain bytes.

As for after market kits then again it can be a hit/or miss journey so with these a respected decent supplier with after market tech support is to be preferred.

Certainly the MES forum has many post regarding doing these tpye of upgrades / configs. There is also ALFAOBD and there are forums where these types of changes are discussed.

On my 500X I'm happy with the uConnect 5" others are not and rip it out and put uConnect 7" or other makes of head units in with Carplay etc. Some are successful in doing this. Others get the basics working but not all functions and all menus. I doubt I will ever attempt this unless my uConnect packs up.

Well these modern computer driven vehicles from any manufacturer really really WORRY ME.

In theory a manufacturer in the EU is supposed to support a vehicle for AT LEAST 10 years. F that. Fiat gave up spport for the Strada 130TC less than a year after the last model was shipped.

With the likes of the Strada and othe 19XX and possibly early 20xx model then support is a "want" and not a "requirement".

Come the 2010, 2015, and later with all these modern computer "digital configurations", rapidly week by week, month by month changes I have no confidence Fiat or any other manufacurer will "guaranteed" support you vehicle 5 years after production date. Worse still the technical, computer, technical details are "closed proprietry" information so not available.

In the old days if something mechanical broke you could fix it, bodge it, or make replacement components yourself. This avenue is not really available to owners anymore..

Whilst there are companies that can hack / reproduce modern electronic vehicle components their business are driven by commercial viability. To this read NUMBERS. Sadly Fiat in the UK is only a very very small member of the market and even less so to those that can "fix it".

Time to build a simple steam engine or get a horse or donkey for your travels!

My 500x had puddle lights fitted already but swapped them for these FIAT ones.
