Technical Popping out of 3rd gear

Hi

When I go into 3rd gear, then accelerate, it pops out of gear. This is the only gear that it happens to. All other gears are OK, there is no grinding or any other noise from the gears or clutch.

I have been phoning around and had quotes of £800 - £1300 to fix or replace the gear box. Is this a gear box problem or is it caused by something else?

if the gear lever feels normal,ie not tight going into gears or feels like it is hitting something,the chances are that the gear box needs 3rd gear and new syncro's,and depending on milage ,and possibly a new clutch.take it to fiat to confirm.

This happened to me years ago in my 127 Sport!, it was due to my youthfull driving style, ie rev to 7000 and slam in 3rd gear to overtake, etc etc.
3rd gear used to pop out regularly and annoyingly.
I took the gearbox apart and found that the 3rd gear synchromesh had worn badly, I changed that part and the 3rd gear and put the gearbox back together, problem sorted. (I bought a spare gearbox and attacked it for parts)

The cost at a dealer will be mostly labour, it a very fiddly job and a pain in the rse. Try to get other quotes from gearbox specialists, taking a gearbox out alone
will be about £200.
