My recently bought IDEA has the side lights on permanently whilst the engine is running, they go off again with the ignition, I was persuaded they are 'driving lights', is this correct?

faulty switch (numanR(y))
So you can confirm that the side lights shouldn't be on permanently and a faulty switch is the probable cause.
I need to be sure as I will have to take it back to where I got it from.

thanks for the prompt reply T14086, is it an easy job to disconnect the switch and meter out the connections to confirm this, I don't have a wiring diagram so would be at your mercy for details on cable colours etc.

Just read the manual & it clearly states that idelights are controllable by switch only.

However...if you have automatic (dusk) lighting system fitted it will bring on side & dip beam simultaneously during dark conditions.

thanks again, no 'auto' light system fitted. I think you misunderstood me, I wanted to meter out the light switch to see if it is working ok or the side light switch is shorted to put lights on permanent, not intended to run like it.

Is it possible that the ecu has been programmed to turn side lights on to create driving lights?

probably, you will have to be patient with me, I last worked on cars in the early 80's I have had company cars since then, now left and have my own. I read in another post where the indicators can be activated by the alarm if the ecu is programmed as such and thought this maybe another train of thought. Thanks again for sticking with me on this.

No problem...the body computer controls the lights are rarely configurable as are set by country they are designated for. Also you can enable the indicators to confirm locking / unlocking via examiner which accesses the body computer. The ECU is engine (air/fuel/spark) related.

:)

Thank you malcolmgb,

I have been looking for a solution to this problem with my Fiat Idea Eleganza, 2004 model for a few months now and just happened to notice your post.
It has been most helpful and I will check it out later.

I have this problem too with my Idea eleganza 2004 reg, but it has now included the head lights they come on with the sidelights when the switch is in the off position and the only time they go off is when I indicate to go right or the ignition is off, and when the indicator recentres they come on again, I suspect it is a fault in the control lever :bang:

Hi there T14086,
I can assure you I am not here to slag off FIAT's, I love my Fiat Idea it's just this problem and it is getting to me.

My Idea Eleganza has developed the same fault. The lights are off and the switch for the lights is off but as soon as I use the indicators (either side) the dip lights come on (switch makes no difference by moving it to on then back to off) sometimes the lights just go off again after a few minutes or sometimes they stay on the length of the journey but always are set to on again by the indicators being used. Do you think the switch is faulty, can it be cleaned/fixed? Fiat want £165 for the stalk/switch plus fitting!!!!
Any idea where I could bet a second hand stalk/switch?
Thanks for any help anyone can give me.
Ian
