My car has somehow clocked itself

A couple of weeks ago it was reading around 85000 miles (quite high I know).

This week it has gone down to 83300 and started working up again.

Has this happened before to anyone and how do you fix it. I bought the car a year ago with 70 something K on the clock, so im fairly sure my mileage is within 3000 miles correct. Will call the garage after the bank holiday.

Cheers :(

Does anyone know whether the odometre counter is a seperate unit that counts the mileage, or is it part of another more complicated system?

The cars in for a service this week and want to get it sorted then. If its not possible to sort out the counter / unit, would changing the whole clocks unit work?

Cheers

The odometer is integrated into the Stilo's security system so you don't want to start messing with it unless you really have to.

Someone had a problem something like this before and I seem to remember it was due to a non Fiat garage resetting the service counter with the wrong equipment :(

The cluster is one integral unit - only chance is getting a new one, or finding a compatible old one. Either way it'll have to go back to FIAT for a proxi-alignment.

Cheers for the replies, what is this cluster you speak of, the clocks unit?

The cars getting serviced this week at a garage but not a FIAT dealer, does this mean that the odometre will go wrong again then? Sorry if I seem a bit simple I really dont understand most car electronic systems or how they affect other systems.

The problem is I need to get it sorted as I imagine leaving the problem could be illegal due to it affecting my mileage reading.

Thanks

Stilo Mileometer problem

Hi, this is a new problem that not even Fiat have seen before ever. My mileometer on my 2003 1.6 Stilo Active gets to a certain mileage which is 40343 and resets to 39943 miles, all the trips reset as well. This as happened twice so far. When speaking to a Fiat dealer ship all they want me to do is take the car in to run a diagnostic on it at £60 +vat. But no warning lights come on for them to check a fault code.
I have spoken to numerous Fiat dealerships over the phone, none of them have come across this before. One suggested it could be the body computer which would cost £270, but they wouldn't guarantee it would cure it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi again, please excuse me as i am fairly new to the forums and not quite sure how to use them yet.

As regards the total milometer, my car was serviced but they couldn't reset the service message. It was serviced at 40034 miles but the milometer resets at 40343 back to 39943 this as happened twice and exactly the same mileage. As i said previously Fiat haven't a clue, one suggested the wrong spark plugs have been fitted causing a spike in the body computer, wrong Fiat plugs fitted. If it is because a garage as tried to reset the service light, would it just be a case of getting fiat to reset it? Also if it doesn't work could i claim off the garage who did the service? and how could i prove it?

"If it is because a garage as tried to reset the service light?"
Most likely.

"would it just be a case of getting fiat to reset it?"
No; more expensive than that

"could i claim off the garage who did the service?"
Good idea - have you got legal aid on your car insurance?

"and how could i prove it?"
That's always the problem :(

Funny, I could have sworn T1 stated that he had met the problem twice before and what they had to do to cure it. Must have read it somewhere

Yep thats right 'decks'...first time I must admit I thought the guy was talking crap until I drove the car for a few days where the mileage did drop after 200miles.In my cases a cluster cured the fault(s).They were programmed with original mileage & been fine since.

I would drive it for a year, then get it fixed. Hey presto a low mileage car ;)

.....joke :(

Hi, when you took your car for a service did it cure the odometer resetting problem, as mine as done it again and at exactly the same mileage and back to the same mileage. In one of the replies there was a comment about disconnecting the battery which i haven't tried yet due to not having the radio code which i am also unable to get from Fiat as they only store the codes for 3 years apparently.

Thanks

You have a fault on your car so a reset is not going to cure it.

The answer was given in post #4

You might be able to get it repaired for only £200 or so with a bit of luck.

Hi, i have just picked up my Stilo from the dealer that sold me the car. They appear to have fixed the odometer resetting problem by having a chip replaced on the back of the clocks. They say they took it to a garage that my local Fiat dealership take their cars when they have similar problems.
The mileage is now 41380 miles having gone past the 40343 when it used to reset. I am a bit sceptical as to what they have actualy done as i would of thought they would need to disconnect the battery to do the repair but my radio is still working and there is no code for it. Does anyone know what the chip is they say they replaced?
