That's the antennae cable:

Is it connected, too?

You're scanning the AM:

Using the BAND button switch to FM or FM1. Not sure if there's something on the air on AM frequencies in the UK.

That might mean there's oxidation on the antennae's thread:

And the most important:

means 'open antennae circuit', which can be caused by the unplugged cable or bad contact on the thread or rotten antennae base. The first two are easier to check.

Use an electric contact cleaner spray to clean the antennae male and female thread AFTER you've physically (steel brush?) cleaned them.

The antennae threads do not look very bad, but the OPEN CCT message is clear.

I don't like the torn rubber around the male thread here:

It can be broken inside, looks like someone tried to unscrew it by the rubber cover when the thread was seized.

It's a standard thread, have you got another car (don't have to be FIAT) with the same antennae type you could swap the antennae with to eliminate the antennae problem?

I would clear the base thread with a contact cleaner.

If swapping the antennae would not resolve the problem, accessing to the bottom of the antennae base could be necessary. Bad earth is a common problem.

Do you have a multimeter? If so, check for continuity between the antennae base thread and the center of the antennae plug connected to the radio unit (of course you have to disconnect it first ;)
