Technical Newbie question about rear electric windows

This is probably a dumb question, but how does the one control the rear electric windows from the front? Was it optional? Was it never an option? It's so weird and really annoying sometimes.

Pretty sure you couldn't operate the rears from the front on any of the Multipla variants
