Recently my Stilo has developed a metalic noise when driving over pot holes/uneven road. After reading many posts with user's experiencing the same symptoms, I assumed the anti-roll drop links were to blame. So went along to fiat and purchased. Jacked the car up this morning and inspected the area, and found the bushes were not perished, the drop link were fine.
My brother inspected the suspension area to find the bottom of the spring coil had snapped! see pic.

This bit can be seen missing from the suspension plate

I have only had the car for a couple of months and the previous owner said the suspension had been changed under the recall. I would point out that the suspension area does look like it has been replaced in the past couple of years.

Does anyone know if fiat are liable to fix this as part of their suspension recall?

Why don't you ask the previous owner if he has any receipts for the work done.

As Chris has said, not much you can do now the mods been fitted apart from perhaps lower it if you want.

Helloooo baby and yet another one :bang: do yourself a big big favour change the springs for a none fiat brand and then you can also hurl that spring bodge into a council skip  you will then be saying thank god for that I havnt got to worry or concern myself about that again :)

How much do you guys think this is gonna set me back to replace this spring?

Is it necessary to replace, baring in mind I have been driving the car like this for the past couple of months? That plate seems to be securing the spring all the way round, don't think it's gonna slip off

Its there [the spring catcher]for the purpose of catching the spring and stopping it from puncturing your tyre and had no other purpose you WILL need a new spring ..driving you car in that condition is to say the least detrimental to your health :)

I must admit I'm quite impressed with that spring catcher. Never really thought about it before but I suppose you could travel over half of Europe in that condition

If you're careful you should be able to get all your springs replaced for under £200 (say lowered 30mm)

Alternatively, you could have Fiat springs fitted but you'd need to keep the 'catcher' :)

What car have you got?

I have a 1.9 jtd dynamic 3 door in red - 2002 plate.

I have seen a set of OMP lowering springs for 109.00 + del. - up to 35mm drop.

Is my suspension gonna be rock hard if I but something like this; My bro bought spax springs and shocks for his golf mk 3 sometime ago, and believe me that ride was uncomfortable!

Not sure about the Spax or OMP but I went for Eibach -30mm and the ride was exactly right for comfort & handling. I was nervous about the ride as I had not long befre had a 2 level spinal fusion but I needn't have worried. They will need changing again soon as they are starting to soften a little.

You'll find just about everyone will agree with bozzy :)

If you really want to fit the originals then I've got an almost unused set for your JTD (No I haven't just taken em off mine Phil :p ) but they'd be just as likely to break again in the next 4/5 years.

What does that mean?

It means they opened me up, removed the discs between three of my vertabrae and then tapped the gaps with 1/2 inch rotary threaders. They then inserted 4 tubular cages (1 1/2" long) in the gaps. After that they harvested lots of bone from my iliac crest (Hip) and filled the 4 tubes up with bone/marrow. They then plugged the open end of the cages to keep the bone inside. Then they fitted an "H" frame from the uppermost affected vertabrae to the lowermost one and using long pedicle screws fixed it all into place where it will stay until they burn me up. Thats why I needed to be safe with the springs.

I did it running multiple races at all distances. Now I limit the racing to 1/2 marathons but loads of 10K's.

My knee was my second skiing injury, the first one being a back injury. It led to the lower vertebrae in my back becoming locked together, which meant twice weekly accupuncture, and 3 times a week in physio. It's not something I ever want to have to go through again, and that's nothing compared to you Boz. 8 miles of tabbing (mix of running and forced marching) with 20kg is about all we have to do, and that hurts, let alone running a half marathon with weight!

I thought this was a thread about Stilo suspension....did I jump to an NHS Forum?????;)

I could tell you all the gory details about my twice attempted vasectomy...but I'll spare you that and get back to snapped suspension coils.... just had my front o/s repalced £116 fully fitted by a little local garage. I assume he used Fiat parts but not sure.

Funny you should mention that Argo...but that is soooooooo close to the truth!!!!:D

Only one spring changed as n/s spring changed previous MOT due to failure.
