hi guys,

i got my first panda earlier this week (1987 sisley) and im having a few problems with it so need a bit of advice please!

1) the brake lights dont work but all the other lights work fine, and theres twin filament bulbs in the tail lights

2) the boot catch wont latch (i hear this is common)

3) the car stalls if the choke is pushed all the way in regardless of how hot the engine is, it always need the choke a little bit out - ive tried spraying carb cleaner on it but no improvement

apart from that the exhaust blows the sills are rotten and the driveshatfs are shot but i can sort those in time for the retest!

thanks in advance

ally

congrats on the sisley.

here are my advices:

1. take out and clean the bulbs and the metal bracket with some sandpaper. try swapping out the bubls. if still doesn't help, then use a multimeter and see if you're getting any juice to the brakes. make sure to have someone press the brakes. don't mean to say that you're dumb and wouldnt' think of it, but... just trying to help.

2. yes, i have problems with mine also and i know of at least 1 other panda that has the same problem. wd40 helped for a while, but since it's gotten worse again. i usually end up pressing the button and then hitting the boot for the button to pop back out... repeat for 2-10 times and it'll get opened. if the mechanism doesn't latch at all, then it will have to get replaced. i doubt it can be fixed if it is actually broken.

3. make sure that your idle is high enough. if it is too low, then the engine will stall when you push in the choke all the way as the rpms will drop. if that doesn't help, then adjust the carburator. there are 2 carbs that i am aware of. one for the fire and one for the non-fire engine. i believe the sisley is a fire. if it is, the look on the left side of the carb (facing the front of the car) and there is a little "tunnel" that you'll have to stick a flat screwdriver and then adjust until the engine runs smooth. make sure you adjust it when it is warm and running on as little "choke" as possible. make sure to adjust that you consider all 3 things: choke, idle speed, and smoothness of the engine before you finish.

hope i was of some help. just remember to have fun!

1. try the switch which is down in the footwell - take the connectors off and join them together with a bit of wire.
If the lights work your switch, or its positioning, is the problem

thanks guys sorry i was so long in replying!

the brakes was the switch on the pedal the wires had come off :)

i shall try the idle screw thing, thanks for the advice

thanks again

also on the boot catch the rivet that holds the hinge mechanism together was worn allowing play in the catch, i hammered it out with a chisel so it was nice and tight again and it works like new :)
