My FTO GPvR

Introduction

Well i've taken the plunge and gone Japanese (it may have something to do with Aaron's GT4 :)), but not to worry I'm keeping the Sei, and the Cinq project until a time comes where I need money! and Aaron has the integrale, and my Dad has his 500, so we haven't completely descended to the Jap side there are still Italian cars lurking to keep us sane

It's a 1997 Mitsubishi FTO GP Version R.

It's not the most well known of the extensive FTO range, but the most raw and sought after now.

There were only 350 GPvR made, all facelift FTO's between 97-99. It has the same 2L V6 MIVEC 200PS 145lb ft as the GPX model, but where it differs it has less sound proofing, loses the digital climate control and goes for manual air-con in the pursuit of weight reduction, but gains a LSD, uprated anti-roll bars, front and rear strut brace bars, lowered uprated suspension for better road holding, a high rise spoiler, HID headlamps (can't think of many cars in 1997 with HIDS), MOMO SRS steering wheel, and different coloured front seats dependent on colour of car to distinguish from other models.

Mine also has the 5 speed manual gearbox, so no silly TipTronic so quicker, more economical and ultimately more fun to drive.

It is standard apart from Wilwood 4pot uprated front brake callipers mated to EVO4 brake discs.

Few things I need to answer, not ignoring folks questions, just been busy with the car.

Insurance for me female 24 3 years NCD, just over £400, not bad on a group 17 car.

Performance, is brisk, 0-60 6.5secs, 146mph top end, takes a bit getting used to fact car revs to 8250rpm, peak power @7500rpm, MIVEC change over 5500rpm, so just keeps pulling to redline.

I think that many are disappointed by earlier 4 speed tiptronic's which although still quoted 0-60 in 7.3secs don't feel that quick, later 5 speed tiptronics meant to be better but still not as quick as manual cars.

The Version R is fairly unknown outside FTO circles due to low numbers made and few in country, even some Jap fans don't know about it.

integrale in garage, GT4 and FTO parked together on double width drive way, Sei sits at front door on road and Cinq at dad's house :D

There are a fair few different conversions on FTO's.

The VR4 engine from I think Galant has been done a fair few times, and full 4WD EVO4 conversions have been done, I'm not sure why EVO4 as the floor plan on the FTO is the same as EVO 1-3, has the transmission tunnel and everything in place, but runs FWD and a mult-ilink rear suspension.

There is a massive thread on Pistonheads where a guy is making a cabriolet FTO with EVO4 running gear.

Looks cracking Em :yum:

You've also answered what I was wondering about the performance. Only FTO I've ever had the pleasure of going in was a facelift GPX MIVEC Tiptronic (guessing it was the 5spd by what you posted).

It seemed pretty quick but not blow your socks off quick as the looks would have you believe.

I would like to try a manual, see how it performs.

What are reliability, running costs and fuel econemy like?

I've made my first mod already, came up at a bargain price so snapped them up, some lovely Enkei alloys. Although they were sold to me as O.Z with O.Z decals on the spokes, but stamped on the inside is Mitsubishi Enkei.

So O.Z decals will be coming off in due course!

New piccy....
