Stilo My 1.8 Dynamic silver arrow

Introduction

My 1.8 Dynamic streak of silver

Hi all. Some of you may remember me asking about owning and running a 1.8 16V Stilo. Well, a couple of weeks ago I pulled the trigger and got myself one. :)

It's a 2002, nice example, imported from Italy by a dealer, 112.000km done, nice service history and a totaly fresh major service (belts, filters, fluids..). I hear occasional squeaks from the suspension and the steering column has the wierdest subtle clonk when turning through straight ahead position, but other than that, no problems to report.

The fuel consumption is not realistic yet, since I keep grinning like a moron when it pulls through 4000 rpm. :D 134bhp is a step up from my 60bhp Punto. :p

I plan to give it a professional full body polish after the winter, since the paint is in such excellent condition, I may as well refurb the alloys (thinking about gunmetal grey) and have it generally cleaned on the inside aswell.

So without further delays, pictures.

The day I picked him up.

Yatour cd changer emulator in action.

So far I replaced some wear and tear items, such as wipers and pollen filters (guide came in handy, many thanks for that). Also fitted a Yatour cd changer emulator, works fine. 4 Michellin Alpin A4 tires, since the ones it came it were fit for the bin and I sourced new door speakers, since one was trashed and I got a pair from an Abarth for 20€. ;)

Enjoying every minute in it, it's very comfy, goes like stink and with these Michellins grips well. All in all the purchase price of 1700€ seems like a good deal. :slayer:

Last but not least, a few days ago a mate with a GP Sport suggested a quick photoshoot. And this came through. :)

Looks as though you need a new timing belt. The teeth don't fit in the pulley (worn belt teeth) and the belt is not in the correct place on the pulley. You can see the marks on the pulley teeth where the previous belt was.

Weird, having shown the picture to a couple of trustworthy people, they said it's a relatively fresh one. And as per the dealers words, all the filters are new, alternator belt is fresh, the oil is crystal clear, the ac blows hard cold due to 500g of new gas...why would he lie about the cambelt?

Well, first of all, if you say that we see traces of a previous belt, than this one must be a replacement. And at 113.000 genuine kilometers a replacement belt surely has to be a good sign.

I will go to my mechanic as soon as I find some time and discuss it with him.

I bought a cruise lever from a 1.6 TS 147 to install in my 1.8 Stilo. All the wiring done according to the guide for a semi predisposed Stilo (brown connector) and done well. 12V from the F35 fuse is active. I only get a P1565 Cruise control level line fatal error-invalid signal and a brief flash of the enabled CC light. Also the message CC switched on on the LCD, which promptly disappears. Proxi alingment was done, despite the car saying it's not needed.

Anyone have any ideas?

He is handsome, isn't he? :) I intend to give him cosmetic touches after the winter..color coding all the black plastics, a full machine polish, maybe even alloys refurbed. I have every intention of keeping him for a longer time, so any improvement now can only echo through the following years.

Have you thought about adding a Fiat badge to the back? Either blue or red

I quite like them with a badge on the back, I rebadged mine - here's a picture:

May do that, but it's a small touch and for the time being the paint refresh is mostly the only thing on my mind.

As I said, I plan to keep it for a longer time, hence no rush in doing it up.

How do your "trustworthy people" explain the gaps between the belt teeth and the pulley teeth?

How do they explain the belt being in a different position on the pulley than the previous one was?
.

I wouldn't say the gaps are that bad? There will always be some sort of small gap where the pulley pulls into the teeth under tension and it's only in a different position because its not as wide as the last one. I wouldn't worry about that SchumacherM cruise control is a great add on isn't it :)

Cars looking good so keep up the good work (y)

And yet his car still works?? Hmmmmmmm :chin:

I have two oil filters in my garage, one is 3mm taller than the other yet the part numbers match when I cross reference them for my car. The car manufacturer may make theirs to a certain size but it doesn't mean other component companies make theirs to the same standard. This maybe the difference of a quality part and a poor quality aftermarket part but to say he has the "wrong" part fitted is misleading and may make the poor fellow worry unnecessarily :D

When it comes to a simple screw-on filter it's a little different to a crucial part of the engine that prevents from chewing its insides apart :p but I see your point gadge but I would be a little concerned myself about the amount of gear protruding from the belt...perhaps the tension can be loosened just enough to slide the belt out a bit, but as you said it may well have settled for that spot :)

Nice Stilo btw dude :D
