Hi, bought a fiat panda, 2006, 1k miles, only 1 key......which Ive lost. Fiat have quoted me about £1000 to get it running again. I think I may have to scrap the car, as £1000 for a key/ecu is ludicrous. Is there anything else I can do?

report that dealer to fiat uk and then go to another dealer, new key can be ordered for about £70
Don't know if they still do, but Fiat used to register all cars with the International Security Register who retained key codes for the car. My Stilo has all the windows etched with a security number and the phone number for ISR: 07000 111333. Ckeck if yours does.

what about the original dealer? they should have the code somewhere
NO....go to your dealer (or any infact) you will need proof of ownership & I.D.
Parts dept will order a key from your chassis number (this is how keys are ordered!) which will take 2-3 days. This can open your car but not start it so it will need to be programmed by dealer.
If they say no then show them this post or even get them to PM me!!!

The most important part of the keyfob is the transponder immobiliser code embedded in it, & according the the info on Fiats site the code has countless combinations & the code alters itself somehow from day to day so making it difficult to copy without data held at Fiat or ISR

In some countries, the Fiat CODE II allows drivers to claim more favourable terms when insuring their cars against theft. The device prevents the engine from being started without the car's original key. The key grip contains a transponder, i.e. a transmitter containing an electronic code that sends out a secret code to authorise start-up when interrogated by the electronic control unit. The code is not fixed but changes each time the car is started. The code is also transmitted in encrypted form by means of a secret algorithm (offering billions of combinations). hi, are you saying that I should not need to change all the ecu, locks etc a the dealer should be able to supply and code a new key?
Its a code 2 immobiliser system (rolling code) same as mk2 punto & I have programmed loads this way.
Another point is you can programme only one key (garage might tell you otherwise) however in light of recent events your best getting 2
2 non-remote keys (£40 each) £80
examiner programming £40
(possible keycode/ISR charge) £10
£130 (better than £1000)

I have some questions, but surely the cheapest way is ordering a key from the dealer.
1. If you need a code then why do Fiat supply a plain key as a spare with no electronics attached to it.
2. When I enquired that they failed to supply me with the sequence and code card, which the fiat manual suggest it is kept in the car!! to access and start the car my dealer said this function is not fitted to UK cars.
3. If the battery fails in the main key how is it reprogrammed surely not by the dealer at great expense - there must a way to re-sync with the car when you've replaced the battery?

1. The plain non-remote key still has a transponder chip in it.
2. The code card isn't supplied with UK cars at the request of the UK insurance industry, apparently.
3. The battery in the main key is for the remote locking - I'm sure there's a page in the handbook on how to resync them if it goes flat.

Manual is wrong...well its not really its just that in the UK the codes are retained by the ISR however you can order a code card from dealer if you really want but just make sure you hide this for security reasons. The overide start procedure is not available on all cars (the ones without a 'K' line)
you mean the remote? Only in extreme cases do you have to get dealer to reprogramme the remote.
As above, Panda is a code 2 system. The dealer needs the V5/I.D then they will order a key for the car. Once this arrives it will unlock the car but not start it untill programmed.
