light tinting? MOT?

today we had a guy ring up and offer to tint both front and rear lights of any of our cars if we want for free if we had leaflets for his company on our till. now he said they were fully MOT approved and guaranteed. but i cant see how tinting your headlights is MOT passable?

just wanted to check before i went for it!

i wondered about putting a light tint on the fronts but i gone off the idea now as i think it was look 'chavvy' but i cant really see why it would fail the mot?

i've just had my mk1 punto mot'd with tinted rear lights and sailed through:slayer: . the tester stated as long as the tint isnt so dark as to stop the light from showing as in brake, indicators, side and fog lights thru then it will pass.
i tinted mine myself but only put a couple of coats of tint on although some that i have seen are almost black

yer, i was planning to do my rears anyway, but never really heard about the fronts been done, sounds a bit iffy to me!

headlights should be a matched pair
a matched pair being a pair of lamps that emit light of substantially the same colour and intensity
so under that rule as long as the tint wasnt to strong you should get away with it

And not disrupt the headlamp pattern. Don't forget some early euro cars had yellow headlamps.

So no blue/red/green sidelight bulbs either.

When tinting the rears, make sure that you mask off the rear reflectors, as this is a failure as well. If you fit secondary reflectors make sure they are red as well, had a few donuts present their car with white rear reflectors!!

well been a sei the reflectors are part of the lamps but i already knew that.

true on the headlight colour. as i said before i only 2 coated mine and the reflectors were ok

to quote bible section 1.4 states that at least 50% of the reflecting surface must be visible from the rear
so i agree if you are unsure mask the reflctors off or only light coat as mr tester will soon tell you if its a pass or fail

ive got tinted rear lights, but i havent got a clue about the reflector never really looked to be honest, can you tell me if its too dark and weathor ill have to put standard sporting lights back on for mot please

just buy some little dot reflectors to stick on for the MOT, i spose you could argue the point its still reflecting atleast 50% as much as it was before!

you can pass an MOT with light tints, but you cant save your reputation

well this thread was a bit of a waste the guy never turned up yesterday or today to do them so looks like im tinting the rears on my own!

depends who you have inspecting the car, a guy dropped a 306 off before my car and he had sprayed over his lights and had a whole host of other defects, not worth risking a fail (can always put back on after but I didn't say that)
