I've had my 2010 500 for about a month now. It was a pre-reg - only had 19 miles on the clock when I picked it up. The only thing that's bugging me is that the left hand indicator doesn't seem to self cancel, or it turns itself off too soon.

Is it just my car or have others experienced this? Is it a generic characteristic? Thinking about using the warranty .....

The right hand function seems fine.

306maxi - that's great to hear. Thanks for confirming. Just a quirk then!

The indicator has been bugging me too - it really doesn't seem to like me indicating while I'm on a roundabout or turning etc. You'd have thought this would be a design thing they could've fixed when the car first came out. But like everyone says is annoying thing :)

It is probably because in Italy they tend not to use the indicators at all = )))

Perhaps they should make a UK or North European Common Sense version for 'better driver' markets.

yes my one too pain in the butt sometimes when got the radio on and cannot hear it clicking

The indicator system in the 500 is basically the same design that Fiat have used for nearly 20 years. They cancel at 90 degrees from the straight-ahead position. Indicating right, then turning left (like entering a roundabout) will immediately cause them to cancel, and vice versa. Get used to it.

Ever tried the indicators on an Vauxhall Astra G?- absolute ball-ache as they don't 'stay' in position! You indicate to overtake, then attempt to cancel it but end up with the left indicator ticking away, so try the right one again, then left... and end up driving a mile or two just trying to flick the stalk enough to cancel it with it 'locking'.

It's laughable that they've taken so long to change this (my 1996 Punto, 2000 Punto and 2004 Stilo) all do it, but i did notice when the Parents test drove the 500 recently, that it is better than any of my older Fiats have been.

A test drive in the MiTo last week revealed that to behave almost normally, though admitedly i could just've been lucky on my test drive or with that particular car.

Even so, progress might be on the way but if not you will get used to it - i hold the indicator stalk going round roundabours on all cars i drive now, even though they all work correctly except in the Fiats

You soon learn to adapt
It's logical how they operate and actually teach you not to indicate too soon, turn them on only when you have stopped applying opposite lock (y)

This is so untrue, the indicator in this car is just pathetic. I have to reapply it 3 times when going round round abouts and parking with it on is just impossible. An indicator is an early warning device and fiat make it a danger, end of. (n)

p.s I also hate the motorway mode where you tap the indicator and it flashes 3 times, you can end up indicating the oposite direction when cancelling............Grrrrrrrrr.

Motorway mode is common to many cars, as with all these features you need to understand what they do in order to operate them

What is intuitive to some is not to others

What does it say in the owners manual?
Did you test drive the car?

So you've not taken the time to learn how it works and then you complain when you do the wrong thing and it doesn't work as you wanted to?

I find the lane change indication feature quite good actually.

Drive an original Jag XJ40 and you have fully electronic indicators, it's a momentary switch in each direction and the cancelling function is achieved by a hall sensor and magnet in the column/indicator stalk body. Works really well, and I wish it was used in 'modern' cars.

If you weren't trying to signal on a motorway like a muppet you wouldn't need to cancel and end up indicating the opposite direction. On the motorway all you need to do is tap the stalk up or down, done.

Who say's he's on the motorway? 'Motorway mode' was a PITA on my Vectra if you didn't push the stalk quite far enough. Vauxhall's 'motorway' flash is impossible to cancel.

I don't like electronic stalks that don't move. You can't check they're still on by checking the position with your fingertips. The 'tick' is often too quiet and looking for the flashy light is too slow.
