Hello

I went today my first service yesterday and discovered that my sump was leaking from the gasket :( but only from the front area, the back is perfectly fine

There isn't enough oil leaking out to actually allow it to drop onto the floor but its enough to soak the whole front of the sump in oil.

I'm wondering if there is a easy solution like some glue that I could put along the front of the sump to stop it leaking, I am also going to repaint the sump as its all rusted. Will it be okay to use rust treatment even if there is oil mixed in with the rust? ( like on punto how to)

cheers

John

You could try spreading sealer on the joint but without seeing the extent of the rust my guess is that the leak is in the face of the sump and is blowing up to the joint and really it's time for a new sump. Any chance of a picture?

Pictures ahoy! After having a proper look under it i think its coming from the oil filter which was meant to have been changed on its last service (2 years ago) but have only done about 1k-1.5k miles!

It also had its MoT november so shouldnt that have been spotted as an advisory unless it isnt actually an issue?

dont wire brush it you will make the holes bigger
wash it off with something llike carb cleaner then see where its weeping from
its usually at the point where the oil sits ie max mark on stick
if its above this level you will normally get away with using jb weld if you follow instructions
under this line and a new sump is best
just tried the sealey sump removal tool and give it 8/10 so a worthy investment from say ebay if attempting sump removal yourself
make sure you get the correct sump too as theres two types denoted by the size of the fitting bolt heads

one final thing i put away a punto yesterday and the oil filter exploded splashing oil everywhere and would have emptied the sump if not noticed very quickly, reason for this? it had rusted through:eek:so be warned fellow fiat owners if in doubt change this $5 article

That looks like new sump to me.It looks original from the hex hole plug - aftermarket are generally hex head screw. Can't quite put my finger on it but it looks to have been off before - maybe. New ones are about £30 plus £5 for the sealer. One member here went prodding at a sump like that and it fell apart. I think he holds the Guinness world record time for getting out from under a Punto with non-stop swearing :)

Oh dear! I shall give it a clean up and see where that leads as i went and brought the stuff to touch it up, all i need now is some axel stands or just drive up onto 2 slabs so i can get underneath the car

I think ill drain the sump before i go prodding around anyway, its well over due for a oil change!

As for cleaner, will this be fine for the oil http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/...uctId_161497_langId_-1_categoryId_255222#tab3

*shudders* Halfrauds i know but its only round the corner from me

Thanks for the help so far :D:worship:

Some bolts replaced with studs and nuts?

looks original and correct to me
later sump with big headed bolts and different internal baffle and sump plug i think from pictures
i managed to put an early one on a late one with judicious use of a drill bit:D

didnt know you could still buy gunk

good name innit
smells like an old abandoned mens toilet in our cities

i said use brake /carb cleaner as it leaves sump clean for part 2--- paint--- or jb weld
gunk just gunks the issue

I would say Gunk worked a treat on on the sump and left no mess at all on the drive!

One hell of a difference!

Now hurry up postman i want my stuff!

just trying to help
ive repaired probably 50 sumps on many cars these last 20 years this is why i recommended a cleaner like brake cleaner as it leaves everything ready for prep when i actually use gun wash but understand most home users wouldnt have access to this
i only like doing a job once
maybe i wont bother anymore trying to advise
