General Japan Spec Panda's

Does anyone know the exact difference between the European and Japanese Pandas?

The finding of this picture caused quite a stir in the Dutch Panda club:

Normally, the speedometer only goes up to 160 km/h. This one goes up to 180. I've e-mailed Fiat Holland about the speedo, but apparently it's for the Japanese market only, and it cannot be ordered from here.

Now I run a Panda 1000, and on a flat road, it tops out at around 140 on the clock.. why the extra 20 km/h on the Japanese counters?

Do the Japanese models have bigger engines fitted? Perhaps the 1108, or even the 1242?

Well, that's a very late model Panda, as shown by the warning light in place of a temperature gauge, the grey instrument binnacle, and the chunkier grey steering wheel.

Apart from that, I'm afraid I can't help any more [8)]

The last European "original" Pandas were 1108 with MPI...

That must be it then! I never knew there were Pandas that came with the 1.1 engine.. awesome!

AFAIK the CVT auto box Panda always had the 1108...

Yes John, but only from '93. The '92 CVT used the 999cc but was soon dropped in favour of the 1108cc.

Brain fade on my part - were the early ones 999 tuned up to 50 bhp, or was that the 4x4...??

The 999cc 4x4s that replaced the 965cc in 1987 were the tuned ones IIRC.

The 999cc CVT was the same 45bhp as the manual versions. Then, as I said, that was replaced by the 54bhp 1108cc in 1993.

The automatic versions (at least here) have regular speedo's: up to 160km/h. Hmm, so I guess the mystery still isn't solved then..
