I'm looking at buying a project car, a 2010 mito tct auto, 40k miles all documents verry clean, at an amazing price.

The lady selling it has it listed as having cylinder 3 lost power.

Upon looking it may have something to do with the "multi air unit"

I'm gonna go see it and ask if I can swap some Coil packs over ect,

I'm verry tempted as she is only after around 600-800£ for it. Even if I got to put a new engine I could still turn a profit.

What do I need to look our for with the 1.4 tb multi air engine, how to diagnose the actual multi air unit its self? Are they repairable/service kits/ rebuild kits avaliable?

if it really is the multiair, which sounds likely, there should be an error code. Early multiairs (around 2010) did occassionally fail, some earlier, some later. Mine failed with around 160000 km or 100 k miles, if I remember correctly. I‘ve heard reports of people which had it fail much earlier.

If it is indeed the multiair, any low level intervention will likely not help. I had a broken actuator on my multiair which affected one cylinder only. The fault in my case only impacted driving when the engine was cold and the oil had a higher viscosity value (increasing RPM above 1500/min with the engine cold would result in severe engine shudder and it would almost cut out, but it could be restarted and would idle normally unless higher RPM would be reached again, so I had to sit there and let it idle until the engine was warm, could be driven normally afterwards).

In my case, the engine light was on and there was an error code pointing to the multiair actuator of that cylinder.

I had to replace the unit. The broken actuator can’t be repaired (maybe it can if you have a second unit which can be harvested, I don’t know). The unit itself was about 1000 € new and the special black liquid seal (same as Fiat used) was 35 €. I don‘t know how many hours a Fiat mechanic would need as I did it myself.

As I‘m not a mechanic, it took me 6 weeks, a huge amount of research and even so I first bought the wrong type of liquid seal which became brittle and had to be removed. I had to order the OEM one on ebay and wait for it to arrive. The goal wasn’t to sell the car but to repair it and have it run reliably. Car runs fine now, knock knock.
