Sometimes when the steering lock engages the wheels, due to caster, camber and road angles, leave excessive force on the steering column so that the lock mechanism/pin can not disengage.

Try forcing the steering wheel to a mid position between the lock clockwise/anticlockwise movement limits. This can be physically difficult as there will be no power steering assist. When you think you have the mid position press the Start/Stop button.

You may have to try several times.

Also can you hear the lock solenoid/motor operating?
