General How many gallons left when fuel light on?

Yesterday I drove my Punto HGT diesel on the way to home through at Wales moor, the fuel gauge light come on.
I try to find the next nearest petrol station on the road was 135 miles away and my fuel trip computer shows the range was 122 miles remain to empty, I was worry I did not think I will make it but I have manage arrive at the station.
I was very lucky did not run out of gas but it goes not make sense to me if the light come on that should be 1.1 gallons/ 5litre on manual book it will go about 60 miles but my sound like more than a gallons because I have done 137 miles on very low fuel it did not sound whirr or cough from the tank and the trip computer is not really accuracy when it said 122 miles and I went past over 136 miles.

I recently had my light (on a 1.2 petrol) come on at 110 miles. At 34miles left, it decided there was no petrol left ..... I drove a further 3 or 4 miles to the petrol station ............. usually, I try not to let the gauge drop much below 1/4 tank

In my 1.2 16v stilo, the handbook says 59 litres, 9 litres reserve. So Fuel light comes on and there is 9 litres left.

I have done around 40 mile with light on and the fuel gauge ends up at the very bottom, the nearest fuel station to me is 1.5miles and mostly down hill so i can make it there on fumes.

Usually i dont like to let it get that low as i dont want to gunk up the fuel pump or fuel filter but sometimes i have no choice and have to scrimp and scrape, hate not been in work, dont really use the car for short journeys at the moment due to funds.

there is no gunk at the bottom of tank, not on petrol engine that is, dunno about diesel, those are just old wives tales, atleast there wasnt any gunk from the few ones i took apart

Oh right, thats not what i found in my cousins 1.4 focus and my old nissan would need a filter change if i kept letting it run out... Learnt my lesson lol.

No, 1/4 tank .... just above the red line

i once did 22km when that needle was like 1mm away from bottom almost resting there but that was with 1.2 8v punto

Last time I refueled when my 1.2 8V was almost empty (probably 1/4 way up the red area), it turned out I still had 4 litres left in the tank (only managed to fill up 43L)..
