Technical Help Please - Loose Gearstick/Linkage ??

Hi everyone (guess what I'm New - put this in the wrong area, trying again)

My daughter's 'P' Reg Punto has lost its gearchange. She said that the gearstick just went slack and 'wobbles' all over the place. She can still engage 3rd and 4th but nothing in the other gears. Is this just a broken, or damaged linkage problem? - or is it more sinister. Has anyone else had the same, or similar problem - what is it likely to cost ME to fix - grateful for any steers.....

Try taking off the bottom gaiter its plastic/leather effect and it just lifts out if you bend the sides in gently (dependant if its SX and higher from a certain age they have the centre console and that is a little different). Have a look at the linkages and see if they are broken or damaged. Also that age of box is kinda naff, they're known for beign a little naff, so it could be the synchrocones gone inside the gearbox.

Many thanks. From her discription it is more likely to be the linkage, as it would appear that the gearstick is like a 'spoon in a bucket' - just flops all over the place. The fact that she can get 3rd and 4th 'possibly' indicates that the selector arm is in one postion, and moving the gear lever doesn't alter that position (or just slightly in one direction). My guess is that if it had gone when she was 'moving off' she would have only been able to get 1st and 2nd - just a thought. Looking at the diagram in 'Haynes', it could just be the first linkage at the gearstick - fingers crossed.

Her boyfriend is going to have a closer look this pm (if the rain holds off). We will start with your suggestion.

Appears gear linkage is 'shot'. Does anyone know if the Gear Linkage control is compatible with a Punto GT2. It looks the same ...... I would appreciate a quick response.

If its for a FIRE gearbox then im sure it will fit, but im no expert

F.I.R.E. engines and gearboxes can interlink, its basically a type of gearbox and engine that fiat make (I think)

Thank you for the info. :worship: Decided to just purchase the items from a Fiat Main Dealer. Told they should be here on Fri, hopefully Kirsty's boyfriend will fit them on Sat.
