I have a 2004 fiat punto. Yesterday I drove to Newcastle and back. The drive there was fine, but driving back the car jerked and the red steering wheel warning light came on. I pulled over when I could turned the engine off and back on and the light went. I carried on driving home and while on the M6 the car jerked again and the same light came on but also ( all at the same time ) the speedometer dropped to zero and returned back, the temperature gauge went high in to the red and dropped back and the little engine symbol light came on and went off.
This then happened a few more times on that ladt part of the journey.

I have today taken the car to the garage for a diagnostic and nothing has been recorded and there are no codes showing. They are going to ring some other garages to see if they have had any cases of this.

Does anybody on here know what it could be? Has it happened to you and you've found out what the issue is?

Thanks in advance.

car overheated?

I had this very same issue when I drove from Dundee to Glasgow and then back, turned out it was my spark plugs and my HT leads, might be worth checking what condition they are in. As for the power steering, did you lose power steering or was it just the light that came on?

A jerk from the engine - and then coming back
Loss of speedo and reintroducing
Temperature guage spikes and calms

To me it kinda sounds like a loose terminal on the battery

Powersteering on punto's is first to complain of a remotly low battery or power

Remove - clean till shiny on the clamps
Ensure battery terminals are clean too and refit
Cover with copper grease or vaseline to protect them

Ensure you dont touch terminals etc
It might be best to remove battery all together

ziggy

Might be worth looking at the earth strap fixing to the top of the gearbox as well. It always gets left loose after a clutch job.

NOT on mine they don't..;)

shame the OP has'nt come back with WHICH warning light was on..,
if it was EML they could get a code out..,

my naff 1st Mk2 , was rotten so had loadsa poor earths,
it would throw an EML after 1 hr 5 mins of driving, pull over restart . another 1 hr 5 mins later the power would tail off , and the EML light would illuminate,
so reliable I never bothered chasing it.. but Bound to be a poor earth.. has similar with rear wiper,
had to turn IGN OFF to stop the wiper motor running

Thanks all.

The lights that came on we're the red power steering light and the yellow engine symbol.

Never lost power steering, just the light came on. Going back to garage today as car has lost power a couple of times.

get the battery voltage checked.. and that the alternator is working correctly.., ;)

then the PAS codes read ( assuming it's a proper garage with the correct gear)
