Hello. Im in Bridlington Yorkshire, Just got a 51 plate Fiat Punto for £200. Bargain if u ask me. Just needs new plug leads.

I however see another problem that there is a loud noise coming from under the bonnet that I am assuming is the big read thing at the back. Its really annoying as it sounds like I have a big bore lol. Could anyone tell me what that is, and If i can replace it?

Or would the fact I need a new set of plug leads be the case of the noise sounding like i have a big bore?

Hi and WELCOME TO THE FORUM

The big red thing is a cone filter/ induction kit that has been fitted by he previous owner. Many fit them to get a bit more of a "roar" from the engine as their power gains (especially from one like that mounted directly on top of the throttle body) is minimal.

Your best bet is to return the car to standard by getting a standard air box assembly from either a scrap yard or somewhere like eBay..

The plugs and leads causing a slight miss may be excasserbating the problem but are unlikely to be the sole cause. As I say the cone filter/ induction kit should really be replaced anyway and will DEFINATELY quieten Down the engine significantly when under acceleration.

I have prefixed your thread to the punto mk2/2b section also so the guys in there can see your post (y)

The standard airbox looks dull but quite a lot of thought and development will have gone into it and more than likely the motor will perform better with it fitted. There are three fixing points for it. The first you can see in your pic centre right, the little bracket with a hole just above the coils. The second is on the opposite side of the throttle body just about where the blue fuel line disappears under the left side of the red air filter. Sometimes this breaks off. The third is a spring with a hook at each end anchored to the bracket on the second from the left exhaust port and clipped to the front of the filter box. The short length of hose with the small filter attaches to the bottom of the box to recirculate the crank blowby gases.

The other problem is you lso have the crank case breather emitting fumes into the engine bay - which will smell you out in the cabin as well

its also bad practice / Mot failure i believe as its letting emissions out where it shouldnt
been oil vapour

The oil vapour is good for the engine as it does burn :)

The Standard Airbox is fine :) - get one, stick a new filter in it from a scrappy :)

Looks like there is a small filter on the dangling breather pipe, so should trap the smells if it is doing the job it is intended for

not only is it illegal that pipe is supposed to vent crank fumes back through the induction process to burn off nasties

therefore not only will it bung up quickly will oil and coke but passengers will die a slow horrible death on a long journey to say scarborough
i think fiat might have got it right with a big black thing on the throttle body but hell what would fiat know they've only been making cars since 1900 nought blob;):D

Ah Scarborough, I remember going into a small seafront hotel late at night in the middle of a firemans convention and asking for a room in my foreign accent and being handed a Bacardi by the nice lady.

In so far as that (little) filter is designed to do anything, it's designed to keep dust etc. out of the engine. It sure as hell isn't fine enough to filter out smells (you might try farting into a running Dyson as an experiment -- be very careful! ;)).
