Graphic EQ + Amplifier Troubles

Evenin' all,

Cing came with a crappy Ministry of Sound head unit, hooked up to 2x4" kenwoods in the front, and 2x6" sony Xplods in the back. This all adds up to a crappy sound. However if I adjust the balance to the left (or right) the rear speakers start giving some good bass...

Is it just a bad quality head unit?

I dont really want a sub, but i do want a nice sound.:slayer: I was thinking of a Graphic EQ/Amp to hook up to the rear (and possibly the front) speakers.
