Hi, had a problem with a loose connection on my stilo's power steering a while ago. Posted a question on here and got the right advice cleaned up all connecters and grounds to do with the battery and it worked fine since then.

Recently however il leave the car say overnight come back and in the morning the battery is completely dead, now i assume this is one of the many short circuits draining the battery so re charged it and it worked fine with power steering back.

Now its gone too far and after the most recent one the power steering will not come back, i cant deal with all the electrical faults myself anymore and wonder if anyone else knows of a good stilo auto electrician in london?

Thanks, Daniel.

Ok now I think I may go insane. Went and bought the nicest looking 096 battery I could find for around £100, fitted this after doing another full clean of all the earths and connectors and still nothing changed! I still have the loose connection message and no power steering leaving me with stilo tank to drive :(

Can anyone help? Anyone had similar things happen?

Or even know any places in London (preferably west) capable of sorting this?

In extreme need, Daniel.

I bought Yani's FES for £70 I think it was, and it cleared the errors in the steering ECU and that sorted it for my Stilo. My battery died when we had that intense snow fall back in December and thats when the power steering had a "fault".

The fault was only there because I tried to start it not knowing the battery was now dead, all the relays were just clicking and nothing had enough power. But the fault stayed there and kept the power steering off - even after I got a new battery and even after the "3 clean start-ups" (well it stayed for me anyway). The power steering system is very "voltage critical" and needs a good supply of not too high and not too low (very goldie-locks. lol)

But FES sorted everything and once it got here through the post, it didn't take longer than 10 minutes to fix.

Hope you get it sorted one way or another. (y)

This sounds exactly the same as my problem, the battery had been drained before (by one of the many short circuits im guessing) but i charged it without trying to start it and everything was fine with the power steering still there. The most recent time i did try and got the same clicking with nothing starting up properly!

Assuming this is the cause and without trying to seem too stupid, what is a FES? also what is the quickest way to get my hands on one?

Thank you so much for the reply you have taken some weight off my shoulders!
Daniel.

It's a better version than fiats own "examiner" FES = Fiat ECU Scan. There is a Sticky you can read up to get to know the product.

You will need three things -

1. A laptop or ability to borrow one.

2. The hardware Unit.

3. The software for the laptop to use the hardware.

I bought my hardware from here ;-

There should be a link to Yani's website on the FES Sticky, you should be able to download a trial version of his software.

Alternatively, you could try and find out if there are any fellow forum members near your area who have FES who could try and clear the faults for you in exchange for a couple pints down your local pub (y) lol.

Just to ask, would any shop stock the hardware? As I would really like the steering for monday if possible!

Thanks for everything, Daniel.

None that I know of, someone may come along soon and know a shop you could buy the unit from, but I'm not sure. You could order it early tomorrow morning and ask for next day delivery (you may have to pay more for the extra service) and then you should get it in Mondays post.

I read through the sticky and it seems to say a vag-com 409.1 cable will do the service resit which I believe is what I need to clear the fault and have found a shop open selling this tommorow so am going to hope for the best!

Thanks again though!

VAG-COM cable will not do the service reset. You'll need an ELM327 (v3 or later) or an OBDKey interface for that.

Service reset is not a fault, it's just the message that displays when the car needs servicing.

A VAG-COM cable will connect to the steering ECU and clear faults from it, but the connections in the cable plug will need modifying.

Ok thanks I see what you mean from the link, if I can get my hands on a 1.4 ELM327 tommorow will that not need any modifying to connect to the steering ECU and clear my fault? Just losing my soldering iron has made the modifying a bit of an issue!

Thanks

Yes .... you will need to connect pin 7 to pin 9 to read the steering ECU.

While you have it open, if you also connect pin 7 to pin 1, you will also be able to read the ABS ECU should the need arise in the future.
