Cars have become progressively safer, partly by increased use of seatbelts and airbags, but partly because they are heavier than in the past. This though has a number of side effects which don't actually help matters. The old Rover 100 was one of the safer cars you could buy at the time, mainly because it was so agile. I had one of these, a 1.4 8v, followed directly by a Fiesta 1.25 Ghia and although the Fiesta had a higher level of grip, the Rover was a cracking car to drive on a twisty road as you could use almost all the the performance because you could steer it on the throttle and the turn in was as sharp as a knife. If only my Panda was as good.
The problem is that as stricter rollover protection regulations have come into force this has brought with them thicker A, B and C posts which in turn limit visibility, especially on roundabouts and at junctions and also bring higher weight. So if something like a G-Wizz comes into contact with a current model Fiesta, it's going to take a bigger impact than it would have done if hit by that 1997 Rover or the Fiesta that replaced it.
I wouldn't suggest that we should all be driving around in paper bags or tin cans but maybe this is the time we should be looking at lighter materials. Although I was never a fan of the Clio, I thought the previous models with its plastic front wings was a step in the right direction.
