Hi all

I've just changed the clutch on my 899 Seicento on the drive which now feels quite nice apart from a bent cable as I caught it when refitting the gearbox which I'll change as I have spares & am now in the process of putting it all back together apart from waiting on a new engine mount, it's pretty much all together apart from the shafts etc but when I reconnected the gear linkages/cables there's no gear selection it's just flopping around & I'm a bit stumped as it was reconnected the same way as it came off but without the bracket but surely that shouldn't stop them functioning, they were very sloppy & worn before hand but it went in & out of gear ok, does anyone have any idea what it could be & how to rectify it as I'm a little stumped. Thanks Matt

With cables off the gearbox I would try and select the gears, obviously with two cables one selector is the neutral gate and the other forward and back. With one road wheel off the ground you should be able to detect if in gear against the engine compression.
Key out of course.;)
Strange it was working before.

That what I thought it was strange that it worked before & now the gear stick's all floppy & no sense at what it's doing, this car likes to do things like this to me 😂 both shafts are out at the minute as I've been doing other bits as well, more space with them both out the way 😂, new bottom arms to rectify a previous bodge & new anti roll bar bushes, reinstalling the shafts & new engine mount is all that's left really & the linkages, I'm waiting on the new engine mount after replacing the other 2 so thought it was only right to do the last one as well & then she should be done. I'll give that a try, thanks Mike 👍

You haven't had the cover off the gearbox selector area or given anything there a good knock?

The cover hasn't been off although thinking about it I may have knocked the selector where the linkage connects with my hand as I accidentally whacked my hand in that area & I did hear it click
I would have thought it would need to be quite a hard knock, so unlikely.
Normally if trying to select the gears at the box it takes quite a firm bump with your hand to engage a gear.:)

All sorted this morning, it turned out I did knock the selector 😂, after a good night sleep I went out there this morning & sorted it within a few minutes so I now have all 5 gears & reverse along with a lovely light clutch 😁 so all back together now along with the new suspension parts, the shafts are back in, new modified type clutch cable put in which I think an original one would have been easier to fit but it's in 😂 so now just to wait for the engine mount & top up the gearbox oil then the grand start up will commence 😂
