ON a dangerously slow crawl up the a1 today to make my way eastward I went for some petrol at sainsburies.

came off that huge roundabout underneath the a1 and managed to get the fronts to spin up in 2nd, then slid the back out on a nice little transverse.
Resulting in some sideways ness in a fwd car, in a fairly controlled manor.

SO I spent best part of 20mins going backwards and forwards thouroughly enjoying myself, and letting off the frustration of being stuck in horrible traffic for what was to be 90minutes to travel 4.6miles(n)

Tis a nice reminder just how slippy/greasy the roads are at the moment!!

Can say that again with greasy roads. I nearly understeered into a kerb on a 'chicane' (those familiar with the A127 will know). Was 'mildly moist' (not raining anymore) but feck me it was slippery! Went round at the pace I would normally if it was peeing down with rain and it just didn't turn. Contemplated Mr Handbrake to get it round but managed without in the end. Seeing a kerb bearing down on you when your turning and the car isn't...was one of those, 'oh crap, i'm going down!' feelings.

understeer and FWD drifting are two totally different kettels of fish....

understeer is simply when the a car turns less sharply than the driver expects due to a lack of grip on the front tyres.

this however, is FWD drifting!!! :slayer:

how else can u drift a FWD car? there is no oversteer to help swing the back around so he has to in effect 'drag' it round using the hand brake.

its stupidly hard compared to oversteer / RWD drifting.... :worship:

Lot's of speed and a jab of the brakes whilst turning.

EDIT: Anyway, you're right that's how FWD drifter's drift, I was into it big style a while back with the little Scooby Rex's and Daiatsu Charade GTi's. But there is more than one way to make a FWD car drift ;)

on a front wheel drive car?

you might get a tiny bit of lift off oversteer from lifting off the throttle during a corner, but that still wouldnt result in a drift...

proper drifts need to be set up before you even hit the apex, which is the reason for the tiny turn towards the outside of the corner before swinging the back around, much like rally driving (i know, ive done it :p ) and the only real way to do that in a FWD car is with the hand brake bein used to lock the back wheels as the turn is entered so that the rear slides out around the front :D

ill go get back in my box now :p

Yes on a FWD, ive been fairly sideways and held it nicely when I've had to brake hard whilst turning, not something i particulary recommend mind.

I've drifted a couple of times over the years, everytime was in my mk1 Punto  Never did it on purpose, usually when going through a drain leakage and then into a tight corner. I used to understeer quite frequently too, says something about mk1 Punto's!

add to that no weight in the back due to taking seats out, and slightly illegal rear tyres, and youve got yourself 1 hell of a time... ;)

Or.. Some 195 contis up front and 165 nankangs on the back, that'd work..
Or if your completely mental, stick a couple of space savers on the rears ;)

lift off oversteer is great, i love working in an industrial port for diesel on the slippy roads and plenty of open space, can have a proper good crack and not worry about hitting anything :D

as for understreer, dont use the handbreak to sort the mess out, it will chuck you in another direction and give you even more chance of crashing... change up a gear or 2 and use the engines toruque and power to regain grip and pull you out of it! that was taught to me by the racing instructors at Brands and my Dad (he was a rcing instructor there aswell :))

ahh, scandinavian flick? :)

tell you what makes the back easy to get out and the car sideways, adjustable dampers with soft front and hard rear

My favourite technique, works best when you're at high speed, is to jab the brakes just as you turn in very hard, you need massive steering input as the car will tend to understeer at first but the rear does come round. The whole result isn't spectacular opposite lock drift but a slow progressive 4 wheel drift, I usually have almost no opposite lock and use the throttle to balance the front/rear bias, a nice way to get around incessant understeer on long medium/fast corners.

Yeh I know the difference

Was just pointing out the greasy roads bit in faster's post lol.

I've done a fair amount of handbrake induced drifting round my private deserted roundabout but stopped that a while back when my (thankfully old steel) wheel had a run in with the roundabout kerb. Haven't tried it with the Sei though, and don't intend to (on purpose :D).
