Hi guys,

There has been an annoying noise at the rear of the car.

Ive taken the parcel shelf, removed the wheel, buckled the seats belts, removed the child seats.

Got so annoyed I started seeing if it was the exhaust. So I rocked it sideways no noise. Rocked it front and back and it's catching or knocking against something.

Maybe the rubbers need replacing?

Thanks

If it is just the exhaust mounting rubbers, they are fairly easily replaceable. They hook onto hangers and need to be prised over edges, so some heaving and swearing will be necessary.

However, before rushing to do this, you really need to inspect it more fully. The front of the exhaust is connected to the engine, and with a bracket at the rear of the gearbox. If the exhaust can move enough to knock, engine mounts, or that bracket might be worn/broken. Can you get someone to move the exhaust while you view all the way along it?

At the back of the gearbox, underneath there is a 'dog bone' mounting. This, as its name suggests is a short casting with a rubber bush at each end. Its purpose is to control the engine rocking as the drive is applied and released. If this has failed, the whole thing, including the exhaust will move back and forth a bit.

It should not do this.
a) it is wrongly fitted
b) it is damaged
c) the engine mounts allow too much movement (see above)
d) the exhaust mounts allow too much movement
e) it is a cheap part and is the wrong shape

My exhaust is wrongly fitted. It needs realigning after have a new back box fitted. To be fair to the exhaust fitter, it only bangs about once fully warmed up.

Why be fair to him. He's an exhaust fitter, it is what he does as a profession, you are being charged for his expertise, he should be good at it. Go back and get him to do it properly. Or insert it in him!

It was replaced free of charge under warranty, and as I am sure you realise, time is money. So it will have been a rush job. I am more than happy to waste some more of his time putting it right for me, and accept that as my payback

No matter who is paying, the job should be done properly. Warranty just means someone else is paying, and will only accept standard times for any job. But if under warranty, it should come apart easily, so no issues with difficulty or time.

once spent the best part of a day trying to cure an annoying bang on a panda i had just sold,in the end i changed all the exhaust and it still had the bang
turned out to be a shocker top eyelet
weirdly i saw this car yesterday for the first time in 4 years, looks like hes never washed it and it had no wheel trims on,looked a right shed, some people have no standards
