Technical Engine query

Not sure where to post this. I have a fiat ducato motorhome 1997, engine smoking and gearbox crunching also no 5th gear. It’s a 2.5 tdi. Anyone know what engine and box goes straight in as I’ve heard there is a 1 for 1 ?

There is no up to date engine and box that would go "straight in"
There may have been engine options at the time 1997 , but you would struggle to find those engines and boxes 26 years later let alone good ones.
Wikipedia has a decent ducato page.

As @jackwhoo says given age it will be hard to find a good replacement s/h .
Strange it is a 2.5 at 1997, I had a 1997 Fiat Ducato Maxi van 2.8 TDi Sofim 8140. Series and as far as I know it was the last pre ECU ones and at 122Hp was a good conversion for a boat I had.

The 2.5 and 2.8 were manufactured at the same time for some years.
The different capacities could have enabled vehicles to fail into different tax brackets in different countries.

Just looked up the available engines for 1997

Your best option by far is to keep your vehicle standard .
Get your engine checked/rebuilt by a decent company - the basic engine had been around for decades , so should be easy for a rebuilder.

The fuel system would also benefit from overhaul . Especially the injectors .

How many miles on vehicle?

Gear box clearly needs rebuild.

From your description 2.5 tdi that means turbo , direct injection , intercooler.
If so it is reasonably powerful with sufficient torque- in fact for 1997 really quite good.

In the Auto data the 8140.47 2499cc1994-02 maxed out at around 116Hp and the 8140.43 2800cc was rated at 122Hp both turbo intercooled and without ECU control, so both pretty good. There was a 8140.43s later with Commonrail ECU ect. rated at 127Hp. I had one of those in an Iveco 35C13 Van, so 3.5 tonne, the C indicated twin wheel and the 13 was Iveco calling that engine 130 Hp , I know with it's six speed gearbox it certainly pulled well even when towing another 3.5 tonne, one of the few vans with a GTW of 7 tonne, you could do that with legally and park on the highway so not requiring an Operators license etc.

Just looked it’s n reg so 1995. I’m finding it hard to get any information even off diesel specialists. The box in an ML and got someone to build it. The engine is smoking so don’t want to do the box to find out the engine is shot.

Engine rebuilder / diesel specialists like something to work with....like the engine code if they can't see it themselves-understandably.
Especially with such an old vehicle.
