Hello, i have recently engine swapped a 1998 1.8 gt 16v bravo and don't know where and how to connect it afterwards. I did the engine swap with my uncle who has helped me with the engine swap process and who i got the car from but i wish to do the rest alone. He advised me to consult the forums or find online how to connect. Any help for what to do?

Model
1.8 16V GT
Year
1997
Short answer is I dont know, but hopefully someone will help. You need to give a lot more details. What have you changed and what have you kept. AGes of both engines. and maybe some photos. You will need to have access to something like mES diagnostics and a laptop I suspect. I hope someone will come and give more helpful comments

The issue stems from "matching the cpu to the engine" as my uncle says which i have no clue how to do

You will certainly need an ECU which matches the engine / year and sze etc. It seems to be a mine field I hope starting this off will get you some help. Do also use the search function and have a trawl through as engine swaps have been done. After 5 or 10 posts if you find something that looks promising you may be able to private message the poster via this site and ask people directly. Try searching chang9ng engine or ECU and see if anything helpful comes up.

Engine was replaced with a 1.8 from a marea, although the stock was also a 1.8 16v. I dont know what year the marea donor engine was but the bravo is a 1996. I tried searching on both this and other forums yet i cant find much

Well that is good as they should be the same so hopefully the ecu might too. If it were me... I would first try to plug it all in and see if it responds. Easier to use what you have. Problems will be if some components are differeent. Things were simpler then but as the engine is older it might not have some things the previous engine did. You may have to reprogram the ecu so it knows what componentts it hss. Or you may need an ecu to match the older engine. software called Multi ECU Scan can do some of this its called proxy alignment. If you use the original cars sensors or have tyem to hand they may get you out of trouble as you can substitute them if errors are caused by older sensors sendong messages to a newer ecu. Multi ECu Scan or MES is supplied by uk based companycalled Gendan .co .uk

They also have a forum and the staff I am sure would be a mine of information on ecu compatibility. May be email and ssk if your ecuis compatiblewith the engine. There may be issues with ignition timing and fuel injection. i guess its possible to tell the ecu, or get another and deal with the other things it controls.

Back when these cars were made thing were simpler. So mes may well ve all you need.

The engine is newer i think, the engine i put was a marea one and the car is a 96/97 bravo

Another thing to ask, i saw a couple of those reset your ECU videos online, could they work because the car is starting for a second and then turning off

I wish I was more expert, but Im guessing here. If the car starts then that is probably good news an d you are really chasing the reason it is cutting out.. It makes me thing even more that you coud do with MES. It allows you to get a look at what the engine is doing and things like fuel pressure, injector timing, ignition timing etc as the engine is running as well as seeing if there are error codes stored. Fitting a newer engine may risk the ecu not being programmed for any changes they made to components and not therefore recognizing the signals it gets. Things like the pre and post cat O2 sensors are the ones that may have changed I guess if emissions changed on the newer engine. MES can instruct the ECU to reset learned functions which might possibly help.

Problem is i have no way to order parts outside of Serbia and sourcing those parts here could be hard. Is there any way for the ecu to be reseted without those tools

Assuming the electronics on the car you have fitted the engine too were all good, what is to stop you transferring the electronics /sensors etc from the duff engine to the good doner engine as long as similar general set up?
Did you locate the reason for firing and dying, fuel or ignition?

Electronics are from the old car as only the engine was broken
The reason it is failing to turn on is likely the ecu blocking the engine but i haven't done a diagnostic yet i only saw on MultiECUScan and i believe thats the issue. I will update when i do the diagnostic as i have all the tools
